Header?

Anyone installed a header on the 4.0? I was wonder if they made any difference in the torque or hp, on or off-road?

I put a banks header on my 2000 tj because the factory header cracked. Can’t tell any difference.. They are a pain in the hind in to do though... Would not recommend unless factory header is cracked....

The TJ comes stock from the factory with a header, and as Cory said, an aftermarket header is not really going to provide a noticeable boost in anything. And be careful if you ever do install a different header, a few of them like the Banks and Borla brands of headers have developed reputations for cracking just like the early headers installed on 97/98 4.0L engines did.

eBay has plenty of headers for the 4.0L engine that have the built-in flexible bellows that flex instead of cracking like the updated OE headers use for earlier TJs. Heck most are even well under $100. I'd look on ebay by searching for "Jeep 4.0L header" and look for headers that have a flexible accordian-looking joint on both sides. They're usually being sold by multiple vendors.

Mine is an 02 so I will assume it past the date of the bad early headers. I think i will just leave it stock and do a cat back exhaust instead. Thanks

Borla and Banks are crap!

Just to add my .02c in here. I originally replaced my factory manifold with a Borla. It cracked in 5 different spots with in 50,000 miles of installation. After months of trying to contact Borla for a warranty replacement I said screw it and bought a Banks. Well it's been 60,000 miles and the Banks just developed a crack in it too. I'm going back to the stock replacement header found here Shop 1A Auto® for Jeep Wrangler 4.0L 242ci Stainless Steel Exhaust Manifold (with Gasket Kit) 1991-99 for your Wrangler.

Don't buy either one, they are both crap!

Wow! what a find, i just installed a new magnaflow direct fit cat w/ mid pipe along with a banks monster exhaust.
i get a lot of exhaust leaky noise from under the hood still, i can still hear the droan of the exhaust while driving but when in a high gear and i give it descent amount of pedal it's loud under the hood, ticking type exhaust leaky noise.
now would a new gasket solve that problem? or are jeep exhausts just noisey at the motor. I would like to hear nothing but my tail pipe. Maybe i need a new manifold gasket and mid pipe gasket eh?

Thumbs down

mudslinger150,

It could be the gasket, but I would check the manifold bolts and the bolts at the down pipe and make sure they are all still tight. Also check the welds around the the tubes. This is where both the Borla and the Banks header cracked on mine.

Before cracking, I did like the seat of the pants feeling of both headers. Can't say how much more torque/HP was gained but there was enough to notice it.
