Just bought this 2000 TJ a week ago so there is no history of why it does not work like it should. I am just getting everything working like it should. It is a 2.5 four cylinder and the heater just puts out warm air and cold air.
The temperature switch works because I can turn it to cold position and the air gets cold but when I turn it to hot position it just gets warm. There is hot water going into the heater core because the heater hose is measuring 115 degrees.
The engine temp gauge shows 1/3 way over, just a little less than half way.
The first problems is your thermostat on the engine coolant is probably stuck wide open, this is not letting your engine get to operating temperature of 192*
Easy fix. Buy a new thermostat & gasket, if you just bought the Jeep, probably a good idea to flush out the radiator & engine anyway, don't forget to add antifreeze when done.
If after you get the engine to operating temperature and you still don't have heat, you need to flush and back wash your heater core. This is also an easy fix, just remove the 2 heater hoses from either the engine or heater and connect it to a water hose in one direction then the other.
one other thing, remove the fan motor, under the battery tray, and vacuum all the junk out. my 97 was full of pine needles and other crap, my heater core couldn't get any air. I used a long vacuum extension used to clean dryer vents out. you have to remove the battery and the battery tray to get the fan motor out.
Easy and important if you are not getting much air flow from your vents with the fan running, your motor speed resistor will keep cooler and it will last longer.
I did the back flush on the heater core last night and that seemed to really help. I got out some stuff that could have been restricting the water flow. I am also getting hotter readings on the heater hoses. I may have to wait until next winter to find out for sure as our outside temps are a lot warmer this week.

Thanks to all. This post fixed the issue I was having. Temp gauge would not go past 1/3 and I thought it was just the cold winter. Found out thermostat was broken and wide open. Fixed and heat blasting. Part = $12.00.
