Heater control lights

Just bought a 97' TJ Sport 12/01 and noticed the heater control lights aren't illuminating.
The guy I bought it from said he doesn't think they have lights behind the heater controls because his 95' YJ doesn't light up either.
So, how in the heck do you see to turn them on when it's dark
Is there a fuse in the panel that is for this or maybe bulbs?
It's dark when I get home so I haven't had the time to really check it out.

Tried a search but could'nt find anything.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

you can replace the lights that are back there easily but i would check your fuses first.

to get to it you need a Philips head screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver. first wrap the tip of the flat head in some elecrtical tape so that you don't scratch anything. next use the flat head to pry off the defroster vent off(one clip is dead center the other two are on the ends). then take out the ashtray and remove the screw behind it and the two that were under the defrost vent. now just tug off the bezel around the headunit and heating controls and there are two more screws to remove it. on the back you should the bulb pull it out and go to the local auto parts store.

My 97 TJ with slider controls didn't light up either. Dealer wanted over 100 dollars to 'replace it'. Turns out it just was missing a bulb. I took the bulb from the shift light, which is just a tiny bit smaller than the 74's that go in the dash, and it fits just fine. I now have an illuminated HVAC setup.

-97 TJ with a few mods. PM with questions.
