Help Diagnosing Sound!

Hello, I was just wondering if anybody could shead some light on my problem and maby has advice on what it is. So her it is, for the past phew days my jeep has been making a couple very annoying sounds. There is a knocking sound that increases with speed and is only present while moving that has been there for a while but recently when I hit 35mph it turns into a loud squeal or metal grinding sound that is not always constant. I suspected u-joints but when I trist them there is no play. Can anybody help me? Oh ps my jeep has 140K on it if that helps narrow down normal wear and tear parts. THANK YOU.

Have you looked at all four corners to see if the brakes are grabbing? Maybe you have a stuck caliper??

Yea, I took off my drums and calipers to check but nothing seemed wrong so i bled the front a little and gave them a good cleaning but no improvement. thanks for the reply though.

Have you replaced an alternator recently? Or any other belt driven peripheral. If so check your belt alignment and tension, a slight offset on any one of those pulleys can really mess a belt up and cause some squealing. That would also explain the increase in sound with speed, if not that, sounds like a clutch/pressure plate issue. Are you getting any strange vibration in your shifter, if so maybe a throwout bearing.

Actually I have replaced all of the above in the last year. So it sounds logical, but the sounds are not rpm related and you cant hear them when at idle so I don't think it is engine or clutch/throwout related. I can hear the sounds while driving down the road/hw and disengage the clutch put it in neutral and still hear it loudly and my trany shifts smooth as butter. Thank you for the reply.

note: It seems to be getting worse because now there is a vibration that I can feel through my pedals and steering wheel every now and then. Could it be drive shaft u-joints or axle u-joints?

Cool

conclusion: Took the frond drive line off and the noises went away completely. looks like the u joints in the cv are toast.
