Help! I broke my Jeep - PICS

Posted in another forum - just looking for input.

I had an interesting adventure at the Cliffs (Insane Terrain) this weekend. The trails were VERY muddy and there was a good amount of water. Long story short, I had to go back and pull my buddy out and ended up getting very stuck in a huge, muddy, clay hole. I was revin it pretty hard trying to get out and got mud everywhere. Everything seemed ok till I got on the road.

Once I got on the road, I heard pretty loud vibrations from under the car. I looked underneath and noticed that my driveshaft was making the noise, well, the u-joint (transfer case side) was broken. The cap was missing, causing the driveshaft to vibrate. A part of me was saying "take the driveshaft off before you make the 75 mile trip back home!" but I got on the highway anyway.

After driving 55mph for a couple mins.......BOOOOOOM, CRACKKKK, PPPOOOWWWW!!! My jeep swerved, I heard a series of loud noises, almost crapped my pants and watched my driveshaft bounce along the highway. I pulled over, picked up my driveshaft and inspected the damage. Here is the aftermath:

From the looks of it, it looks like I need a new driveshaft, transfer case, and a shifter linkage. Another thing to point out is that my trans fluid pan was leaking as well, it probably got hit.

So what do you guys think?
How much can I pick up the parts for?
Where?
What other damage could have occurred?
Any advice on the repair project (I'm gonna try to tackle this on myself)?
:brickwall:brickwall:brickwall
As a side question, any tips on cleaning this?

Looks like you had fun. Hope you have another vehicle to drive in the mean time. Yea takin the front shaft out would of saved ya! Live and learn. Personally I would find a rubi trans case. It is going to cost you 1000 or so for a trans case. 300 for front driveshaft get one built for the rear too at the same time. Let me know when you get some parts or need help pullin stuff off. I just did a sye today and did everything your going to do to pull the tcase off. To the trans pan I think drop it inspect it and figure if you need a new one. To clean the motor off hose works well. I am up in gurnee btw. Always willing to help. Let me know if you need to find out what tools, I have remembered them all from today lol.

BTW I would regear it too 4.10's or even 4.56's while doing all this work.

If you are looking for a good brand spanking new T-case, advanced adapters has some good deals on low range T-cases. A good buddy of mine got his from there, he said they have great costumer serves!

Look thru jeepforum.com in the classifieds, there's always 231's in there forsale and some with the SYE already on. Your best bet & cheapeast would be finding a 231 w/SYE otherwise the if you want to invest the money find the 241 rubi t-case and upgrade to that.

His GF drove his Jeep the first time off the road. She was "a bit" too fast. That was a 5" hgh and 20" wide jump...

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I hope I am. In the second picture down is their some damage to the trans case above the trans pan? Looks like a torn rubber boot of some kind.

I started taking everything off today and it was a pain. There was clay/mud everywhere.

I'm definitely gonna do the SYE upgrade but don't know too much about it. Does the kit come with the front and rear driveshafts?

Also, which u-joints do you guys recommend?

With a SYE you can keep your front DS (my still works with 5-5.5" of lift and a 3.5" belly-up skid). You only need a CV rear DS.

Tom Wood offers a good package of a SYE and CV DS.
www.4xshaft.com

You could replace the broken u-joint on your front DS. Or you could buy a better HD front DS.

I hope that only your fron TC case is broken and not something inside the TS.

problem is I think he destroyed his front shaft so he is probably going to need a new one. While he is at it he should just get new front and rear shafts when he goes sye.

It looks to me like only the part (red circle) that holds the 2 u-joints and the CV joint is broken. Replacing that is way cheaper than a new DS.

I am doing that to my front. The problem is I can not see the yoke side on the driveshaft. If that is done for then a new shaft is in order. That whole cardan joint I just basically bought was 72 dollars and if you need the H piece connecting them is it another 65 dollars. I have part numbers too if you need them.

From tom woods the front driveshaft is only 350 I think. My rear cost me 299 today from him.

my DS on the pic cost 120$ for the parts only. a buddy works in a cardan shaft shop.

I don´t see a reason why I should install a HD front DS. If it brakes, I have 3 stock DSs in my garage.

Why is it bad to find the parts?
That are standard Dana Spicer u-joints and cv-joints. And the part in the circle on my pic is available in every shop that builts jeep axles (p.e. Tom Wood).
Rebuilding a DS doesn´t take much time. We replaced all joints on a friends ZJ front DS and we only needed an hour for that.

well if you have mix-matched parts ie: DS, T-Case out put then probably different U-joints. Otherwise it takes 2 of the same Spicer or Precision U-joints. I just rebuild mine this past spring. I got the parts really cheap from a driveshaft shop.

In the story above he mentioned having a vibration and when pulled over saw a u-joint cap missing. Instead of pulling the driveshaft off, kept driving the the u-joint finally gave.

This doesn't happen alot, it's one of those misfortunate things.

Just remember after a day of wheeling check everything over before hitting the road and especially wash off the brakes, inside/outside of wheels and front suspension before hitting the road to drive home. Dry, heavy mud can reek havoc and give vibrations on the way home.

When calling around for a transfer case, do I need to specify what trans I have? Should all NP231s just bolt right up to my trans or do I need to worry about some sort of adapters?
