help I need this part for my rear differential and don't know what the exact name is

I have a 97 jeep wrangled automatic six cyl. 4.0 I only need this part .. what is the exact name of this because everytime ibtell someone what I think it is , its not!!

First, you are in the correct forum. That entire assembly is a collection of parts but most would just call it the carrier, others yet call it the case. Others would call it the differential. That big round gear bolted to the carrier (because it carries the gears) is called the ring gear, and inside the carrier are the spider & side gears.

Technically, it's the differential case assembly.
The case holds the ring gear, and contains the spider/side gears.

The correct terminology is important when using the FSM.

Do you think if he knows its not just a remove and replace and that differentials must be shimmed and setup.

Rule of thumb: If you don't know what its called or what it does, leave it attached to the Jeep!!!!!

usually if you take the carrier out and don't change/mess with the ring or pinion gear you should be able to just put the carrier back in with the shims in the same spot they came out of.

I agree but I think he just pulled it and let everything fall. Plus I am still not sure what he plans to replace.
