Angry HELP.. Jeep runs but wont go into gear.

I was driving my 2002 jeep stick shift just fine today. I heard a noise, I tried to change gears, but it would not go into gear. I eventually got it into gear and the vehicle stop moving. My clutch can be pushed to the floor with little resistance and be put into gear without putting the clutch in. The jeep starts fine, but can not get any gears to get it to move. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be wrong. Thanks...

It sounds like your clutch is not disengaging completely. Until you drop the transmission you won't know for sure, but it sounds like the retaining clip on your shift fork may have broken. It is literally a $2 part from the dealership that clips the shift fork to the bell housing on one side, providing a pivot point for the shift fork. If the clip is broken the slave cylinder will press the shift fork forward when you press the pedal, engaging the clutch and it will not return to its aft position, preventing the clutch from disengaging. Because the slave cylinder is not actually touching anything, this is also why you will not feel any pressure on the pedal.

Once you drop the tranny (before you decide to change the clutch) take a look at that shift fork to see if the clip is in place on the passenger side of the bell housing. If it's not, then you know for sure what your problem is. If it is there and it's intact then please disregard my entire post.

I found this photo on another board, but it's a good pic of the clip on the left side of the fork in the photo.
