Exclamation HELP! My Wrangler is clanging and sounds like its about to die!

Hey guys........I don't know what happened the other day, but I was turning onto a major street and stepped on the gas a little too hard. The next thing I know, my Jeep is sputtering and i hear this loud clanging from under the car. Afterward, I could barely make it up the hill on my way back home. I checked under the car and nothing seems to be loose. Same with the engine. It literally sounds like my Wrangler is about to die. I'm afraid to take it to the dealer, because I honestly don't think it will even make it there. I recently did a tune-up on my car (oil change, lube, spark plugs, etc) and it was running great. Then I just stepped on the gas a little too hard and it sounds like its on its last breath. Any ideas/help would really really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
-Paul

Maybe a spark plug is dirty? that would cause it to run like crap.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I had a spark plug mashed down onto itself once after a tune up. I guess I hit it on something while trying to find the spot before replacing it. It did that type thing.

i dont think its the plugs, as that was the first thing i checked. i took all of em out, made sure they were gapped right and were clean......they should be working fine. incidently, the plugs are champion 7034.

check your distributor cap and rotor, make sure your throttle body is clean. It sounds like you already took care of checking your plugs and plug wires. These are all quick easy checks when your engine starts running sloppy. Fairly inexpensive to replace as well.

Hey, thanks for the ideas! But I have an '04 Wrangler TJ Unlimited....these guys do not have a distributor and a one piece spark or coil rail assembly. Any other ideas?

If it won't rev up, check to see if the cat has plugged up or the muffler has come apart inside and is closing off the exhaust.

Check your air filter, or a leak in your air intake...

Hey guys, thanks for all the help. I just went down and turned it on. When its idling, the engine is just rattling (like a pair of maracas). If i try to give it any gas, a loud clanging starts. The air intake seems fine with no leaks, and the muffler is in good shape. Like I said earlier, this all started when I hit the gas pedal a little too hard turning onto a road. Any more ideas??

Is that rattling coming from the engine or the cat?
