Help with stuck torx bolts

Hey everybody-

I know you'll be able to help with this one. I'm trying to remove the "floaties" or "jugs" from the front bumper of my 98 TJ. I know they're torx T30 and I've gotten 3 of the 5 out. The problem is that I can't get the others out. I've managed to get them out about half way but they won't come out all the way. I can barely reach inside the floaties and feel something in there that seems to be holding the bolts in place and won't let them come out all the way.

I've used WD40 to loosen them and get the grit off, (which helped some) and tried with a cordless screwdriver and torx bit but that seems to slip so I've gone manual with a screwdriver and torx bit and that does alittle better.

Anybody got a way to get them out?

Thanks in advance for the help
Brandy

Use a breaker bar.

Drill bit and an easy-out.

Sounds like one of those situations where one would need to be there to get an understanding of what's going on to be able to offer any useful advice. But, I agree with Tiny, use a ratchet or breaker bar to get more "umph" and power through it.

One of mine got rip off somewhere in the woods then I just kicked the other one until it came off. Didn't damage the bumper either. Thats probably not the most succesful way to do it but its quick and easy.

If you haven't stripped them, don't drill. I spent three days removing a torx after I stripped it out. Get a breaker bar and lean onto it to keep the bit tight in the head. They'll come out just fine. There isn't any loctite on them on the bumper I believe. You just can't get enough torque to take'em out with a screwdriver.

Or, cut the bolts and kick the damn things off.

1. Use Rotor(dremmil) tool to cut head of bolt off, 2, pull stupid plastic section out. 3. Time used 60 sec.

Yup, this is what I'd try before using a drill or grinder. You can always go to the power tools if a breaker bar doesn't work.

I bow to your wisdom, 4Jeepn.
When I was a machinist, I went with the least damaging method first. If that didn't work, then I got the big hammer.

If you have the bolt out that far you should be able to grip the head of the bolt with a pair of vise grips. You don't have to worry about the torx slipping in the bolt but the bolt will be useless when you get done.

lol... nope no wisdom here, and your way is the 1st way to go, but in the situation written about, power tool seemed to be the path of least issue.

Just kick the damn thing it'll fall right off. Your foot will be the least damaging tool you can use. Thats my method but rage from anger instigated the kicking method.

Yep-

I'll try the breaker bar the first chance I get. They're not stripped so that seems the least damaging. Then maybe the vise grips or cutting them off.

Thanks again for the suggestions...and as long as everybody has fun that's good too

Jeeze MOG, are you trying to get me to say something off-color??.... cuz I will.

BrandyBAH - There's a bit of metal on the inside of the jug that braces the bolt and gives it something other than plastic to grab. There's a possibility that the threads are getting caught up on it, though I'm doubting that all of them would have messed up threads. It's got to be using the wrong tool.

I was serious about the kicking them though, took me about 2 minutes to get it off.

I drilled the middle of mine out then used a punch to knock what was left out. You'll need a good bit though.
