Help with TORX screws!!!!

Ok so for the 3 weeks ive had my jeep I have had trouble with every single F*#&^)G torx screw. I ordered KC Hilights with the windshield brackets. As i went to unscrew the torx screws to install the bracket I felt as if the screws were welded on. I also had this same problem with a torx screw on the bumper. I had no choice but to epoxy the bracket on to the windshield. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem as me and if so has any words of advice.

Many of the torx bolts, like those that hold the windshield and door hinges on, are held in place with Locktite. They can be a nightmare to remove, that is a given. I have had to drill more than a few out and have ended up having to use heat/welding to get some out.

I wouldn't rust epoxy to hold your KC light brackets on for long.

I got the KC light mount for the windshield and was only able to remove the two side torx screws with some strength but I couldn't get the one screw on the front so I left it tightened the bracket on with the two side screws and its sturdy!

When I removed my bumper I had to use a big heavy duty ratchet and I put a short pole over the handle for more leverage on the top four bolts. But I stripped the bottom ones and used a vise grip to finish unscrewing them and threw those in the trash I had the same size screw in a hex head so I used those for the bottom and removing those is super easy!

We have to use the impact at work to get them out. Not the impact drill, but the one you hold in your hand a knock the $h!t out of with a hammer. It's the only thing I've found that'll work, but its scary as hell to watch the windshield flex everytime you hit the impact. Haven't had one break...yet...

Fortunately, I removed my bumpers and replaced the torx with SAE bolts when the jeep was new, still I have to heat the bottom ones up to get them out.. The doors and windshield torx were taken out when new, and I loosen them up most every springtime, just to keep them from seizing up.. I still use an air impact tool to get them out, lowest setting, and lots of patience.

X2 on the Impact DRIVER. Worked on my tailgate hinges, windshield hinges, bumper bolts and seatbelt bolts! Cheap investment if you have a Jeep.

For the ones that are in the paint (windshield mounts) I used a razor blade to cut the bond with the paint, then some penetrating oil (PBlaster), and then ripped on them. Not to state the obvious but where the torx match the paint, they were painted while in. I did strip one so I was extra careful on the others.

For the other ones like on the bumper, just some penetrating oil, a couple 'F' bombs and a drill.

That works but be careful. I had a Craftsman torx bit snap recently while I use using my impact wrench to loosen the torx bolts on my door hinges. When the torx bit snapped with the impact wrench working, the broken torx bit jumped out and made a nice arced 8" dance across my door's paint. All in the blink of an eye.

LOL! And I always wear a heavy glove on the hand that's holding the impact driver! You learn pretty quick after missing the driver and hitting your hand with a BFH !

I bought a 97 bone stock 2 months ago. Mirror relo brackets, striped torx screw had to drill head off and drill and tap new threads. Replaced front bumper broke a torx bolt, replaced rear bumper broke a torx bolt, replaced shocks broke a bolt on pass rear. Spring spacer lift kit stripped bump stop cup bolt. Gone through quite a few cans of PB blaster on all bolts. So I guess I'm lucky that I only broke a few bolts. Installing new gas tank skid this weekend so I'm guessing....a broken bolt. Oh well I still love the jeep

Hate, hate, hate torx bits. If its an option I try to see if there is a nut on the other side and just use the bit to keep it from turning. I also use a breaker bar or an impact wrench with lots of care and my full body weight pressing down. On my cj project I resorted to a lot of grinding and cutting...I cut windshield hinges off to remove the windshield frame and even cut holes in the rear of the tub so I could grind off the roll bar bolts so I could salvage the bar. Needless to say the old tub is toast and gone.

Totally did not expect such a large amount of torx haters. I honestly thought it was just my jeep being stubborn. The epoxy seems really solid right now. Im hoping that you arent right Jerry Bransford haha.

These bolts were designed for men to love to hate, and god damn, they nailed it!
I had to use a pipe wrench to get my bumper bolts off after stripping 2 of them. Drilled out lots of them, then found the air wrench, lowest setting and letting my son hold down the trigger for however many minutes until it finally busts loose (yeah, cheating a bit I know, but hey, he loves to hold the trigger and I love to let him).

Well at least u guys have success. I went to pep boys and got a fold up torx set and the thing broke into many pieces after trying to loosen up a bolt.

Pep Boys (Autozone, Kagen, etc.) is the last place I would expect to find quality tools at.

I had a similar thing happen to me.

I just installed my windshield brackets and lights the other day without any power tools.

Went beast mode with a ratchet and socket and snapped the torx bit and put a nice 3" gouge in the winshield hinge.

It's a good thing the lights look good (IMO) cause I was pissed!

One thing I learned is use the proper size torx bit, there is no 'close enough'. I also replaced a lot of them with hex head bolts. I hate torx.

I did the same rear pass bolt on my shocks when doin my lift. It was the top one on the inside. Those bastards were a PIA! I now understand why mechanics use lifts!

Here's the reason torx bolts are so commonly used in Jeeps and so many vehicles today... that's the only type of fastener a robotic assembly machine can reliably pick up and insert on the assembly line.

An impact driver is the only thing I use to get those damn torx bolts out...and it works really well. You can get one at about any auto parts store, Lowe's or Sears. Here is a pic of one for those that don't know what we are talking about:

Used one of those style impact drivers for years for motorcycle repairs steel to aluminum always seems to seize. One of the best tools avail. Give the bolt impact shock and makes a quick twist with impact.

I don't know how, but I didn't have any trouble taking my torx bolts out. I will admit though that I was pretty nervous of snapping something because I did hear creaking before the bolts broke loose.

I used a breaker bar instead of a ratchet for leverage as well as a gm performance socket. I really need to invest in some air tools.

Has anyone replaced all of their torx screws yet? I'm considering doing it but can't decide between replacing them with pan head allen screws or go back with tapered ones to fit flush in the countersunk holes like the original torx do...
