Hi pinion dana 30

Is there much to be gained by going from a low pinion to a high pinion...? Enough to make it worth the swap?
2003 Sahara with 31" tires and no lift at this point.
Thanks,
Brian

At the point your TJ is currently at with no lift & 31" tires, probably not. Where that upgrade becomes very desirable is once you get to much more difficult trails where rocks & other obstacles start causing problems for the low pinion and thus the low driveshaft position of the stock axle.

I'd probably take the offer of the free HP D30 you mentioned in your PM & stash it away for future use if your plans include building your Jeep up for the more difficult rock crawling trails like are so common and popular here in SOCAL.

What Jerry said, as well as the fact that they run on the other side of the gears making it ~30% stronger, otherwise they are just like a LP. Im currently building up a HPD30 for 35s and maybe do 37s in the future.

As long as we're on the subject, are there any bolt in HP30's available for TJ's and if not, what makes the best donor.

They bolt right in. The driveshaft length may need to be shortened a tad.

I had some issues specific to my Jeep that needed to be addressed and since my brackets and what not were not exactly stock to begin with I couldnt say with 100% confidence that it was exactly a bolt in swap. Jerry how ever, is sure.

Mine was direct bolt in from an 88' XJ. The only problem I had was the knuckles were swapped for Tj(99-up) so my 97' rotors hat size was too big and had to get the correct rotors. Also it was not setup for ABS.

Brian,

I agree with Jerry. If you're getting it for free, grab it and store it until you want to regear and/or add a traction aid. Then regear and install the HP axle and sell your old LP axle.
