high oil pressure! HELP!!!

ok so my oil pressure is way to high. (obviously by the title of this thread) My gauge reads up to 80 and im sure would go past that if it could, now i know some are going to say it is broken bc it shouldn't read that high but i know its not. when i take off as soon as I start to accelerate the pressure goes up, when i let off the gas and start to slow the pressure goes down. this is causing my oil pan to leak as well as my pcv valve. does anyone have anyclue what will help clear up this problem? i've already replaced the pcv valve and replaced the oil pan gasket. should i change the oil sending unit or will that even have an effect on oil pressure. any help will be greatly appreciated. I drive a 1990 4.2 6cyl stick by the way. thanks

It sounds to me like you have an oil gallery pluged up. That is the pressure the my friends big block chevy runs. There has to be a blockage somewhere if you pressure is that high. Another thing to check is your headgasket. If the engine is pressurizing the crank case then That will make you oil pressure rise because of the ambient pressure around the oil. Sounds to me like it could be either of those things.

I agree with the above.

i read that my oil pump may be faulty or a could just be using the worng grade oil. i use 10w-40 and don't know if the oil pump has ever been changed. also how would i go about unclogging the galleries if that is the problem?

Wrong grade oil, should be 5w-30 or 10w-30. If your pump was worn you would be having less not more pressure. As far as your galleries go, you will have to have it pressure flushed somewhere or you can try running an oil additive through your system that you can find at an auto parts store. You should still check into bleed by from your cylinders. Good luck.

With winter coming up I would run 5W-30. You can "adjust" your oil pressure somewhat by changing the weight of the oil. For example if your pressure is too low with 5W-30 then move up to 10W-30. You wont notice a huge change in pressure between the
5W- and 10W- oils but there wil be some. I also agree with 04moneypit, you should have your system flushed and checked for leak down.
