Highway rpms

Me and the wife are going to spend the weekend out at the farm in kentucky this weekend, I just got my jeep aligned and did a tranny drop for the budget boost I did to cure up a small vibe. Anyways she wants to take the jeep because my family owns roughly 100 acres and there is some good four wheeling on our property. My jeep is a 99' sport 4.0l with the auto tranny , that would be the 3 speed '32rh' model I really didn't buy this thing to do alot of highway driving and it seem in third gear on the highway its running kind of high in the rpms roughly 3,000 rpm's at 65 mph. Is it or would it be fine for a four hour trip on the highway. I just don't know about running it like this for that long of a period all of my past 4 wheel rigs were fords and all of them were five speeds This is my first jeep and I don't know what the 4.0l is capable of.

It should be fine. Your mpg's may suffer a little. If it were me I would let it roll back to 2800rpm or so and settle in for the long haul.

I cruise at 3000 rpms for hundreds of miles all the time, there's no problem. I have the same 3-speed automatic with 4.88 gearing and 35" tires and it does fine.

Thumbs up Proven

The Jeeps 4.0 I6 is a proven engine. If you keep up on the oil changes you can run it like this all day long.

You'll be fine, just take a gas can just in case.

What size tires and what gears are you running?

I work on generators that have several different engines. None have 4.0s, but lots of inline 4s and 6s. They run at 3600 RPM for days....24 hour days and sometimes weeks. Often under very high load. I think you will be fine.

It was a bummer when they changed them from 1800 to 3600. They used to be so much quieter.
