Hole In The Tailgate

What does everyone fill the whole of the tailgate with where the wiring harness comes out off with?

I am assuming that is where the wires go through the gate to the third (middle) breaklight that hovers above your spare.

When I removed my spare and light and ripped out all of the wires I still had a small rubber piece in the whole. I simply left that there as it was.

I Used a Very Short Bolt with a Washer on the Inside and a Nylock Nut On the Outside.

There's an unused plug inside the tailgate. I pulled it out and plugged it in the hole.... Kinda like they knew we would be ditching that light....

You can get rubber plugs at Home Depot and Lowes.

That's what I did, too.

I just got a plastic button cap from lowes and smeared a little silcone around the edge and just popped it in. Works great!

Apologies for bumping a very old thread, but this is relevent to my question and I didn't want to start a new one. I no longer have a third brake light and I'm left with that hole in the tailgate. There was no plug on the inside or rubber grommet in the hole, so I have a feeling that the prior owner had done something back there.

The rubber plugs from Home Depot and Lowes (or any other source) sound like a good solution. Does anyone know the size that is required, or a picture of one that has been installed?

How about using a tape measure to see what size the hole is then go to lowes and get one?

Since I have no idea what was actually used, it's entirely possible that they are not sized according to the hole or are labeled in some other way. By getting information from someone that has already used one, it prevents the unnecessary hassle of multiple trips to the store to find the right size.
