hot transmission

what would cause a transmission to get to hot, is there like a internal or external cooling thing that could break. cause after a while of driving or towing somthing i start getting this burning smell just when i start off but when im going at hiway speed i guess it cools the transmission off cause no smell. thanks for any help

Automatic? There is a transmission cooler built into the radiator. If you're towing, you should install an external cooler as well. If you've gotten it hot enough to smell it, you may want to get the transmission flushed since the ATF is probably cooked.

its a manual, and i changed the fluid myself about 3 weeks ago. but smell still happened. where is the atf and how much does a transmission flush usually cost. i heard the manuals dont come with cooling, should i put something on it to help cool it.

Manual transmissions don't get flushed like automatics do. It does not take ATF. No, you don't need a cooler for it nor is there a way to even install one on a manual transmission. A manual transmission will get hot enough during normal use that you can't place your hand on it for more than a second or two at the most.

What gear lube did you fill it with and what model year do you have? Or what is your transmission model if you know that?

i forgot what weight and what brand but i know it was what the book said to use, and i have a 99 sport with 5 speed, dont know the model of transmission. when you change the tranny fluid on a manual, do you have to do the transfer case seperate, and is the transfer case only used when in 4wd.

the transmission model is on the case so you need to look up because AX-15 and NV3550 use completely different fluids.
no you dont need to do anything to the trasnfercase, just drain and refill. the trasfercase spins when its in 2wd too, so you might check the fluid in it too. use ATF+4 in transfercase.
