Question how far can you get on a differential that's empty?

a shop was paid by me to drain and refill both diffs on my TJ, Dana 30 and D44 with Trak-lock. they drained but did not refill.

so 7 weeks later, 2000 miles later, the front diff seized both bearings, and I almost crashed on the freeway.

my diff rebuilder says for sure there were no leaks and both diffs were nearly dry, they had to have forgot to refill. says he's seen people go some miles with an empty diff.

the responsible shop, they say there is no way they left them dry, the diffs would both burn up in just a few miles.

the underside of the Jeep is dry, so is our driveway, so where did the lube go?

anyone know how far you can go with a diff that is empty?

I told the diff rebuilder to go ahead and fix my baby, later I'll use the State system and see where it goes.

guy is rebuilding the D30 and pullling the D44 apart and putting new bearings for a total of $850, which in south Orange County is pretty reasonable

Yeah i would take them to court. Its to much of a coincidence that both diffs are empty at the same time.

my son worked at Walmart and at Econo-Lube. both places trained him to NOT lube vehicles, said it just wasn't necessary.

since we do pretty far out in the desert and into areas of Baja, from now on, I'll re-re-re-check lube levels myself.

we go into place in Baja where you would not want to have to walk out of on foot

Do your self a favor and make sure everything is documented, you have every reciept and maybe a statement from your repairing mechanic. Along with photo's of your undercarrage, showing no loss of fluid. Dont assume anything........maybe they just added the L/S friction modifier and forgot the Oil.
