Question How hard is it to replace synchros in the trans?

Hey Everyone,
Looking to buy a 97' TJ with a 6 cyl. 5 speed. It pops out of first gear, the guy says its the synchros. How hard is it to replace/fix this problem? can it be done in the garage or is it something a trans shop has to do? Has any one done this job before? any advice is appreciated. thanks

i will try and tackle 99% of anything, unless it deals w/ the trans or rears. i dont mess w/ that stuff cuz of the specialty tools needed and the know how needed to do the work properly. if u havent done it b4 i would say drop it at a shop

I can't help you on rebuilding a trans but, check to make sure the stick is not hitting the body where it comes through the floor. That happens sometimes.

Welcome to WF.

In my opinion, it's not a do-it-yourself job (unless you know what you are doing) and it should go to a trans shop. It could also be a simple re-adjustment of the linkage too and that would be much cheaper to fix. Get a professional to evaluate it or deduct $1000 of the price to compensate for potential repairs.

I'm not sure if it does in second, I know its doing it in first. Thanks so far for all your input. Sounds like I should plan on knocking a grand off the asking price.

I have the same problem with my 2000 tj.. Its been doing it basically since dop. but it is interm. It can suck when you go to pull out of somewhere and it slams out of gear. I planned on addressing the issue when the clutch goes unless ofcourse the trans tears up before then. If it turns out to be an easy fix let me know. because it gets old and some times it does slam out of gear pretty hard..
