How many RPM do you run at 60 MPH?

What is your RPM at 60mph? please state engine size,manual or auto trans, axle ratio, tire size, and what you think? perfer more acceleration to MPG? would you prefer to run higher/lower rpm at any/all speeds? Inquiring minds what to know your opinions.

I don't use 5th gear. In 4th, with the speedo showing 60mph, the engine is turning ~2200rpm. According to GPS, I'm actually gong 66mph. I really need to regear. I'd be happy if I can turn those RPM's in 5th. It would give me a boost on the bottom end. When I can afford it, I'll probably switch to 4.10, just because I can do it by simply swapping in different axles.

At about 60mph, my jeep runs @1900-2100ish RPM in 5th gear. I have a 4.0L/Manual/3:73s/32x11.50

Plenty of power and acceleration both on road and off road. I still get 15-16 with a heavier than stock TJ ( big bumpers, tire carrier, skid plates, rock rails, winch, tools, spare parts and heavy right foot ) Very Happy with it.

I don't remember my RPMs when I had stock gear ratios (3.07's) but it was A LOT less.
But less RPMs doesn't equate to better MPG.
With the stock ratios (3.07's) I had lower RPMs but had to have the pedal to the metal on the highway just to get along - hills and headwinds were even worse with the 3 speed auto constantly kicking down.
Now (as stated above) with the 4.10's - RPMs are much higher but I'm using A LOT less gas pedal to travel at the same speed.

I wish I had 44's with 4.10's.. it's a little anemic in 5th gear if I hit an incline..

I would like more low end power. Thinking about regearing to 4.10 but I'm leaning towards 31x10.50x15 when its time to change the tires.

So, which is the preferred?
Running higher or lower RPMs?

I would thinkthat it would give you better mileage running at a lower RPM, but, according to this thread, it seems like some of you would rather run at higher RPMs.

Also, it there a way to tell which gearing you have (3.73, 4.10, etc.) by just looking at it? Or, is the only way to tell by rotating the drive shaft & counting the tire rotations?

Yeah, most of the time I have to shift to 4th to maintain speed uphill.. Sometimes I just run in 4th up to 73-75 MPH @ 2600 rpm...

If I'm running down the road in 5th, I have to keep it almost floored to maintain speed. In 4th, it takes a lot less throttle.

So, if the seller doesn't know what the gearing is, other than jacking the vehicle up, and rotating the drive shaft, how else can you tell what the gearing is?

You can't necessarily go by the BUILD SHEET, because you might not know what mods were done to the Jeep before you bought it.

There solid be a little plate on you diff covers that will say what gears you have. If its stock I doubt the po messed with gears but you never know.

I actually just got these tires this week(Falken Rocky Mountains), after stepping down from 33x13.50 Nitto Mud Grapplers. I love what these tires do for the jeep. Everything bout the jeep feels stronger/tighter. The jeeps pulls harder now through all gear, not to mention is easier on it. I was going to downsize to 31s, but like you, figured the 32s would be a good compromise of looks/performance/gas mileage/etc. and I couldn't be any happier with the results.

At about 60 in 5th, I'm turning around 2100 or so. Steep hills, heavy head wind or a combo of the two and I'm in 4th gear. I actually get a little better mileage in 4th because the engine is running about 2600 at 60.

This is why you have to get the vehicle geared properly to be in it's power range. If the gear is to high a ratio your lugging the engine below it's power range and having to mash the gas further than normal. If the vehicle is geared properly even though your turning more rpms the engine is in it's power range and running more efficiently.
Less throttle opening = more engine vacumn and better fuel efficiency.

Does this seem right? Seems low?

I am curious what rpm's I would be running at 75 mph in 5th with 4.56 rears and also running at 75 mph in 5th with 4.10 gears.

I would imagine your 99 would not be much different than my 97. I want to re-gear but I am a little nervous to go to 4.56 and have highway miles at high rpm's. The 4.56 sounds like the way to go, from what I've read. Where are your rpm's when going 75 mph in 5th gear?
