A friend of mine has a jeep for sale that I'm thinking about buying. It is a 99 sahara 5 speed. 104k miles. It has a 4 inch lift and I think it has a 1 inch body lift. He says that it does road walk a little bit. How expensive of a problem is this and how could it be fixed?
I was just taking a shot in the dark. Does it drive down the road a little crooked? Adjustable track bars let you keep the axles in line with the body. That way one tire don't stick out way farther than the one on the other side.
^^^ This... Start by making sure all front end parts including ball joints and wheel bearings are tight (no play), also check the trackbar. Could just need to be aligned. It's hard to put a price tag on it until you know the cause.
Caster angle is off. Corrected with adjustable control arms which angle the front end so that when you turn it "pushes" the tire toward the road. The tire will fight it and self correct to get away from that push, which is pretty much how its set up stock. Picture an arc if you're looking at your tire, the more the tire has to push downward when turning the more self-correction you get. If shes wandering all over the road the arc isn't pushing into the road. If you have a mechanic shop near-by that specializes in off-roading they can explain it in better detail and could set you up with the proper alignment once you get the control arms. Hope this helps.
My 2000 Jeep Sahara 4dr also walks all over road with 33" mud tires and 3.5" lift. some is the poor pavement, but when i get to 60mph the jeep is not safe do to drifting in the lane. I am thinking I need to address the steering and the suspension components. They have been on there for a while and look like they need to be updated.
how complete was the 3.5" lift? adj track bars, control arms, etc.
if it was lifted 3.5" and didnt address the control arms it would result in low caster which causes the lack of return to center in the steering wheel.
Not enough caster but have to compromise between no driveshaft vines vs not enough caster
This is where manual locking hubs can really help as allows less optimal front driveshaft angle this you gain caster
