How to get a smoother/softer ride on the street?

I'm guessing that I will get a lot of grief for asking this question on this forum but I'm going to ask anyway because there seems to be a lot of people that are willing to help with a lot of knowledge around here.

I have a 2001 Wrangler (Sahara package) that I very rarely get off road with. It only has 40k miles on it and I have mostly just drove it around town on the weekends. Lately I have been taking it on highway trips to the lake house and now it looks like I might be driving it around Chicago streets a lot more. So here's my question: Is there an inexpensive way to get a better ride out of my Jeep? Every pot-hole or crack in the road is jarring. I know, I know - the Jeep wasn't designed to be a luxury sedan, but I'd like to make it a bit better if I can.

Do I just need new shocks or is there something more that can be done for minimal bucks to make it ride better?

What tire pressure are you running and what tire size is on the jeep.

Also, is the jeep lifted. That will affect it a lot.

Either way, to get a better ride I would recommend new shocks. Old Man Emu's are know for there ability to absorb bumps. The ride is still stiff just not as bone jarring.

i hate chicago

anywho, new shocks will help. i'm assuming its stock from the description. run the tires around 28 psi and thats about it. if the tires are old and worn that will affect the ride also.

I have 31's, i had 35 + psi in them=from the guys who installed them!!! I lowered them to 28 psi and the improvement in the ride and the way it hits speed bumps improved dramatically. I now get an even wear across the tire too.
