How to identify rear axle ratio

Hi Folks,

What is the easiest way to find out what rear axle ratio a TJ has? Is there a code on the door data plate/sticker or someplace else. I'm looking at some used TJs and the dealers/sellers don't always know what the ratio is.

Thanks,
Paul

There is a tag on the diff housing that is held on by the diff cover bolts. The gear ratio is always on that tag. It may be a little tricky to read. It may look like 04.10 for 4.10 gears. Your choices would be: 3.55, 3.73, 4.10.

'93 YJ, 2.5, 5 spd, shackle lift, 31" Boggers, 4.88, Lock Right ina rear, True Track ina front, known as "Lenny." Built by the five handed monkey that lives under the stairs, with lots of used parts

When your Jeep is lifted, generaly, it will NOT drive like it used to.

^^^^^ What he said...

In addition, we could probably figure out what the gear ratio is based on year, transmission type, and axle. Also, dealers should be able to look up axle ratios by VIN number (used truck) or it should be on the window sticker (at least it was on mine 3 years ago...) Have fun in your search and let us know if we can help you!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!
