At about 70mph plus, there is a howling noise coming from either the tranny, transfercase or rearend when there is a load, ie I have the gas pedal depressed. When I take my foot off the gas at that speed it goes away. I'm not sure if it is new or has allways been there as I haven't driven it much lately, and very little at that speed.

That noise is typical with the rear end going out. It might be the ring and pinion. But that is not definite. It could be tranny issues too.
Just getting to work is an adventure.
