hp dana 30

i did a search but couldnt find what i was looking for.. i know its stronger and yadda yadda yadda.. but how much work is there to put it on a tj?

i found a cheap d35 with 4.10s that i was thinking about swapping the rear out of my jeep with for now.. plus ill have spare parts for it in case i do break it.. this will just be temporary until i can swap in something else..

since my jeep is down until after xmas, i figured id look into doing an axle swap for both front and rear.. thinking of getting a hp d30 as well with 4.10s..

the questions im concerned with is what exactly has to be done in order to fit it under my tj.. i just got a new jks front trackbar, will this be able to work with a hp d30? is the steering set up any different?

i want to keep the hp d30 in the long run,and swap the rear out.. i figured id go ahead and lock the front before i mess with swapping a d44 in the rear

make sure the high pinion D30 does not have the axle disconnect
other then that is this out of an XJ if so just bolt it up

X2 Bolt in swap, no fabricating. Im doing thesame thing. hp 30 front with 4.10's. Check around at junk yards and Im sure your bound to run accross one.

You want a 95/96-1999 xj front axle.. these are HP and have the bigger u-joints. in 2000 they started to go with LP 30's..Direct swap to the tj.

alright sounds good.. do any xjs come with 4.10s? my buddy thought they only came with like 3.55 and 3.73s or something like that.. right now i have 3.73s i believe.. so 4.10s will just be temporary as long as im running 33s

will i have to do something about the bigger u-joints?

what do you mean by a non disconnect axle?

The cherokee used a vacuum disconnect axle for 4wd and you don't want it. The HP 30s you want will have a 1 piece shaft. You want the bigger U Joints. Which, they aren't bigger than what you have now. They should be the same size. Older versions used a smaller Ujoint and small sucks.

I had a HP30 in my junk a long time ago. As far as strength, the only strength you gain over your LP30 is in the ring gear from the way it rides on the drive side. You also move your drive shaft up and out of the way which is nice. I have never seen a HP Dana 30 with 4.10s. Most had 3.55s in XJs. Which I believe is the case split but I don't exactly remember.

Ditto, I've never seen one with stock 4.10's in it either. And yeah Andy 3.55 is the break point for the Dana 30 cases.

IF you find one from an xj with the tow pkg it should have 3.73's.but I think that is the lowest out there.

I don't suppose you still have the HP30 lying around any longer? If you do, perhaps our friend could make you a reasonable offer to take it off your hands?

It sems to me that the later model police pkg Cherokees had 4.10's, but now that I think about it, could those have been 44's under a cherokee?

someone on another forum said that a 4 banger xj has 4.10s.. i never knew they made 4 banger xjs? but ill start looking into it.. i wouldnt mind finding a hp 30 with 4.10s so i wont have to regear.. i see there are a few for sale off of jeepforum but they are in like nevada

I'll clarify. Some XJ's do have hp 30's with 4.10's but they are pretty hard to find. They came in XJ's with the 2.5L I4 engine. This was available for cherokees between 1984-1996. For the larger u joints your going to want to find one from an XJ between the years of 96'-99'. They were most abundant in the XJ's with manual transmissions as well. They even offered a hp 30 with 4.56 gears. This ratio can be found stock in a hp 30 from an XJ with the 2.5L I4 with an auto trans and the towing package. But good luck finding that. Very rare to find a front end like that.
