HVAC Vacuum Switch

Does anyone know what the different colored lines from the vent switch are supposed to go to? A bunch of mine are just hanging and the switch doesn't change where the air blows. (I have checked under the hood and can't find a leak in that line that was the first thing I did)

If you go to rockauto.com, you can find pictures of the switch with the vacuum harness installed. Search for AIRTEX/WELLS p/n 1S2187.

The pictures do not tell me what the lines are supposed to go to. I need to know what colored line is supposed to go to what actuator. I have a blue and a yellow vacuum line that go to nothing and I need to know what they are supposed to switch.

The blue & yellow go the actuator with 2 vacuum connections, the only one that has 2 for your yr, I think. It controls the defrost & “mid level” positions. I’m not sure which hose goes to which inlet though. If you have good vacuum from the engine (when running) you should be able to feel vacuum as you move the selector to the various positions by putting you finger on the end of the hoses.

Here is a link to FSMs & for 2000 go to about page 20-21 in the Heating & A/C chapter for the diagrams. Other good info in there too.

See online read only FSMs here:
Jeep Information Center, Jeep Parts Catalog, Jeep Repair Manual & More
You may have to go to the bottom of the page & pick Jeep Resources & online manuals if it directs you to home page rather than the knowledge base.
Pick your model & year then on the drop down menu pick the chapter you need.

Thanks I could only find 2 actuators earlier and both have vacuum lines running to them. I will try to find another one tomorrow when it is daylight.

There are some differences between yrs so not sure if this will be the same as yours. But here are some good photos & you can clearly see the blue & yellow lines in one shot.

I do know that I don't have either of those actuators under my dash. not sure if thats because of year difference or If they are missing entirely.

I just bought it in July and have limited knowledge as to what the p/o did to it. (Working on it I have found many things that were done cheaply or incorrectly, many seem to be temporary fixes that became permanent)

Look at the photos & see where the end of the actuator attaches to the plastic arm & where that goes into the heater box & see if you have a hole there in yours. Those 2 hoses have to connect somewhere & all yrs use them as far as I know, just positioned differently & maybe only have 2 actuators but still use the same hoses, with 2 to each rather than 2-1-1.

after looking at the pics again that middle actuator is the only thing different. I'm thinking it was removed/broke at some point. I have the bottom one with the brown hose going to it and the top one with the red hose. When I was crawling around underneath I was looking for another hose barb on the two actuators but couldn't any.

It is somewhat common for the plastic arms to break or just fall out of the place where they connect to the doors (as seen in the first 2 photos in the link) but removing the actuator is a bit odd even if it was bad. Maybe the arm is still there, just the actuator is gone.(?)

I went to the locale pick-n-pull and grabbed the middle actuator out of a t-boned '98. Now everything works the way it's supposed to. (and the hissing sound coming from the dash has stopped ) Still not sure why the actuator was missing.

Thanks so much for your help Rubi.
