i cant get the doors off!!!!

ok my jeep is a 97 and i dont think the full doors have ever been off at all!!! so i wann take them off so i first try to take the passenger side off and snaped both of the nuts off almost flush with the hindge! ( yeah i was Fuc#ing pissed!) the drivers side nut come off OK i cleaned them up but the door wont come off do they just lift straight up? i soaked the shi* out of them with PB blaster and no luck any one got any help???? o yeah i hate ohio rust!!!

Yeah, they come off straight up. Be careful not to scratch the body. Every spring I usually use a rubber hammer on the bottom of the door to help persuade them. Good luck.

did you get pass. side bolts out??? you can achive more with a hammer than just pulling on them!!!

Well, I bought an '05 a couple months ago and now I want to take the doors off. I'm not sure if this is common on all '05's, but mine is a Rocky Mountain Edition and the nuts on the bottom of the hinge pins are painted. I read somewhere that those nuts need to come off before the doors can be removed. How do you remove those nuts without messing up the paint? Are the nuts threaded or just a pressed on fit? I'll appreciate some input on this!!

you can try sleeving the nuts with a thin cloth or somthing to protect the paint. Personally, I just took them off and left them off. If someone really wants your doors they're gonna get them. I forget what size they are but the nuts are threaded on. Hope it helps.

1. They are threaded
2. The nuts will lose the paint when you take them off.

Do what we all do and "LOSE" the nuts after you take them off. Some even cut off the part of the bolt that hangs out of the hinge so you don't have to worry about the bolt sticking out when the doors go back on.

It helps to put on some kind of lube and move the door back and forth as you try to pull them off for the first time.

You just answered my question also. Nobody had ever taken the doors off my Rubicon. It was much easier with the 07, it was a cinch. Thanks for the info!

i have to swing my doors back and forth as i am lifting up.. it takes a bit of muscle to get em off. Mine have been off for a week now... God i love spring

also the best postion to have them in to take them on and off is to have them about a foot and a half open and then pull straight up, or at least that's the best for me, the first time i did it, i got out the rubber mallet and soaked the shit out of it, remember though take two strikes on the bottom then two on the top and on and on, or else ull just be making it crooked if you just hit the bottom and it wont help at all.

As for the door not wanting to come of try puting your foot under it by the door hing lift your foot like a lever and lift up.

As for the bolt use a Socket it will decrease the ware. it is slightly larger then a 1/2 inch I will see if I can find the measurement and get back to you.

When I first got my jeep a month ago the doors had been off so the nuts where gone already. But I couldn’t get em off I was pulling, rocking, wiggling, trying everything to get them off no luck. Sprayed them with kroil and put on arm on the bottom of the door the other grabbing the interior door handle. Rock the door back and forth while pulling up. The first time might take 10 min a door but it will start to come up. Once off lube up the hinges with grease. Next time I took them off took 1 min a door.

Tips on door removal:

A) The threads on the nuts on the bottom are "Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey."
B) Once you take the nuts off, leave em off until winter.
(In the winter, they help keep mud, salt & crud outa the
bottom).
C) Don't let the doors swing open when you let the strap loose, or you'll put a "dimple" in your hood from your mirror.
D) Some states have laws about no side mirrors, so order or contruct a side mirror to cover your a**.
(I found a great source for a side mirror....e-mail me and I'll give it to you).
E) Fully open your windows before removing the door. (it gives you another point of leverage when you are taking them off, and putting them on).
F) Before re-installing the doors, put bearing grease on the pins.
G) If you have the newer electric doors, (windows and locks) pull the orange locking clip back fully and press on the black tab BEFORE attempting to disconnect the electric connector.
H) On your first attempt at removing the nuts, grab a pot holder from the kitchen and put it behind the wratchet head, between the ratchet and the door, to prevent scratching.(don't let the wife see you taking the pot holder or she'll be ticked off).
H) Don't over-tighten the nuts on re-install or don't re-install the nuts at all.....(til "winter" that is).
I) The doors are heavy....at least on the 2008 JK. You can do it yourself unless you are disabled or have a bad back. Lift the door off, and put it back using the underside of the window frame top and the door handle (presuming you followed my instruction about opening the windows before removal or installation) for better leverage.
J) Make sure you have a spot with a rug, rag, or some protective item on the floor, so that you have no possibility of chipping the paint on the doors when storing them.
K) I prefer to stand my doors up, rather than lay them down, during storage, for LOTS of reasons; not the least of which are the family pets, the wife, the kids.
L) Bring the doors inside somewhere; a shed, a garage, the basement....don't lay them in the yard....it just ain't right..
M) If you have electric windows and locks, after you have disconnected the electric wire's, place the connector from the door inside the molded map holder on the inside of the door before walking the door off the hinges and into the garage. It saves wear-n-tear on the electric connector.

seriously, you may need to wiggle the door back and forth as you pull up

I bought my 05 last year and the previous owner obviously never took them off before.

It was a big pain in the ass. Just use lithium grease on the pins and work it hard. It still might take a while though.

It's a little rough the first time but after the first time, they slide in and out a whole lot easier. Less screaming and a lot easier!!!

California for example requires a driver side mirror, but not a passenger. Kragen is a good place to get a cheap one

I took off the nuts but have not cut the threaded part off since it makes putting the doors back on easier.

WOW thanks for all the good advice!! i will try to wiggle the door i have no problem with a little motivation i just wanted to make sure i knew how everything works before i bring out the rubber mallet and really screw some thing up that i didn't know how it works first i will keep you up dated!!

Always have to work my doors open and closed while applying upwards pressure. My door nuts go in the toolbox until I sell the Jeep on each one.

By the way, ....regarding the dimples that the door mirror will put on the side edge of the hood if you let them swing wide......

I tried to remember NOT to let the doors swing, but even my best intentions and efforts didn't stop it from happening the other day, on the passenger side....

So I decided that I'd let the DRIVER'S side door swing wide and make a "dimple" so I'd at least have a matched set, and perhaps unknowing individuals would think the vehicle CAME that way!! (lol) (with "dimples")

Soupy you got half doors or something? When i had my mirrors mounted on the doors they swung open all the way and hit the plastic flares on the bottom, not anything else.
I have full doors.

don't forget to remove the fuse that controls the buttons that turn on the dome light when the door is open (guess you could tape them down), otherwise when you take off the doors the light will stay lit, not a big problem when driving around, but if you leave the doors off while the alternator is not running, it will eventually drain the battery... I have been wondering where that "dimple" on the drivers side came from!

Keetz ...dimple hehe as for the interior lights.. all you gotta do is put your hand behind the dash where the button is and feel the wires. Grab it by the plug (not the wires) and pull it out. The lights wont go on anymore. This way you stil have the buzzer and everything else and when you need the interior lights, all you need to do is turn them on manually from the inside.
