I4-v8?

Hey, I have a 2.5L, and I'm sort of thinking of upgrading to a V8. How long do you think my stock tranny and axles will last? anything else that will go out/need to be replaced?

i dont think any v8 will bolt on to your stock I4 tranny.. w/ the tranny you probably will need a new tcase.. if you have the d35 that will be quite easy to brake w/ your 33s and the torque of a v8.

I was thinking a grand cherokee v8 might fit, but ya i know the axles will eventually break, just wanna know how long cuz if i did this i would ride em till they blew. the other option is to get a junker samurai, truck, or yj/cj to drop a v8 in.

is your tj for street or trail use that is where you need to start with. i would personaly go with a stroked 4.0. they turn out to be 4.6l and crank out +260hp and 300ft pound of tq. match that with an auto and that would be fun and RELIABLE.

Could someone give me an idea of the cost of a re-gear to both axles compared to swapping in a 4.0L from another wrangler?

its not really the question of how long man, it depends how you drive it. from what i've seen on the forum people say regearing for both axles goes for about a grand with labor and parts..

how much would you estimate the cost of swapping in a 4.0L? would my same tranny and t-case work? Could my axles take the power?

The AX5 won't stand up behind the 4.0. The 231 might last but since you are swapping out the AX5 you will need a new transfer case. Your axles will take the power but not for very long with 33" toyos and steel wheels. That is a heavy setup. There isn't a cheap route to take either way you look at it. The best bet is to drop your 4 banger back into the open market and start with a 4.0 and dana 44.

With all the changes you are talking about, it might be cheaper to stop modding and start looking for a rig that already has a 4.0 and D44 and start over with a platform closer to where you want to be...

or find an old CJ5 and beat the hell outta it and not worry about breaking shit on the trails you can go farther in a stock CJ-5 not worrying about breaking anyhting that you can in a lifted DD TJ, just beacue you push it all the way to its limits and its WAAYY cheaper

All very possible options, but on a side note... I got a 3k lb winch for Christmas! Will my stock front bumper be able to handle it? and the reason for the engine swap would be just to have power for the street. 2.5L with 4.55 gears or higher has plenty of off-road power. Just need to decide gears or engine, cuz these tires and wheels are killer on gas mileage with these stock 3.73 gears.

for a winch i believe you need a plate to mount it to dont you? from the pics i've seen a winch does not even touch the bumper.. The bolts go directly on the frame

3k seems like it wouldnt be enough to pull your rig unless you're planning on pulling bikes and 3-4 wheelers.

The stock bumper is a far cry away from being beefy enough to support your winch. Of which, you probably shouldn't use for recovery operations on your rig. A 3k lb winch will get you into more trouble than you are already in.

It would probably be cheaper to get some axles you can gear deeper than the stocker units. I heard Dana 60s are nice.
