So, the check engine light has been intermitently coming on. Its been going on for a few months now and I've been listening, feeling, looking, even smelling to see if something really is wrong.

Well, the other day I was sitting at a red light idling when all of a sudden it kind of "down idled" (dont know the technical term for it) and the check engine light popped on.

What could be causing this?

go to autozone and see if you can pull out something from the memory since they should do it for free with their scanners.

any other symptoms? rough idle or something like that?

My tj has dropped the rpms down to 300ish but it didnt feel like the engine was going rough.. just the rpm meter dropped (only)

It is really worth the investment for one of the code readers, I've seen them down to $50 lately. I have one of the acctrons I bought about 4 years ago that has paid for itself just with peace of mind when the light comes on. I'm going to pick up two of the mini ones to add to both TJ's tool kits so they are in there all the time.
