Ignition switch stuck off

97TJ

My Ignition Cylinder is stuck in the off position.
The key retention button - doesn't retain key (it used to)...I can push/pull key in or out as much as I want.

I cannot turn the ignition key on though - stuck in off position.
Steering wheel is not locked either.
I took the shroud off the sterring column - had to make a slice to get over the key cylinder 'flange'.

Any thoughts on the next steps?

I have had the TJ for about a month, fixed a lot of minor stuff - do not have the original key. The key I got with the TJ would not easily unlock the door locks - had to wiggle, make the right facial gestures and then it would go. I had new keys cut today - copies of the old key - they work in the door locks beautifully, and started the Jeep flawlessly - I wonder if the new key could have been the culprit? No evidence on any keys of abnormal wear or breakage.

Do I need to drill out the button where the release tang is supposed to be when the key is on? I cannot rotate the key to get the elease tang to 'pop out' I have the Tamper resistant T-10 and have taken the cover off the

Thanks....!

Try turning the key a little while tapping on the column with a hammer right under the igniton switch, if its bad then you should be able to jar it enough for the tumbler to line up and turn.
