Inspection failure

Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone on here has failed inspection with their wrangler due to "Readiness"? And or could explain to me what that even means lol. The inspector couldn't even explain it... Go figure lol. All he knew it was something with my battery, which is only about 8 months old. I just replaced my ax-15 and clutch my car should be flawless!

Thanks

does the battery have the proper hold downs securing it in place? Where are you from? Maybe knowing the local inspection laws could help us determine the problem!

If the inspector can't explain it then there is a bigger issue in my opinion (and not with your Jeep).

New Jersey only checks emissions. Did you take it to a state facility or an independent garage. I went through with air horns, fully cracked windshield, 135 watt headlights and all they did was hook up their ODB11 connector and then place a passed sticker on it.

I just did a quick google search about the "readiness" issue that many have in NJ. Seems as if it is linked to the OBD reading " Comprehensive Component NOT ready". Have you recently had codes cleared to turn off the CEL? Has any recent exhaust maintenance been done?

Hmmm.... Not that I know of. I bought my car November of 2011. Many problems since then lol. But recently my brake light would not come off. I'm pretty sure my uncle came to my house and disconnected something that made it disappear. Maybe that's the issue?

After a quick google search of "CEL" I've learned that it has to due with transmission? Am I correct? If so I did just put a brand new trans in the day I took it to get inspected

Recently disconnected the battery? You do not have enough start cycles since disconnect...

"CEL" is check engine light. If you just put a new trans in then you will need to wait a few days and have multiple restarts and shutdowns for the system to be "ready" again. That is likely what the inspector meant with it having something to do with the battery (meaning it was disconnected during transmission install)

I just called the transmission shop and asked for their opinion and they did disconnect the battery during the swap. So I guess I'm going to drive around in circles for awhile then give it a try again lol. I appreciate all the input you guys sent! This has to be the best forum in the world.

All of your monitors have not had a chance to run and pass. The current im240 readiness fail only applies to the 05/06 model years.

So yeah, make sure you have one trip from cold, meaning, make sure it sits for about 8 hours before you get a drive cycle in (evap monitor requisite).

You basically have the answer, clearly the test equipment could not communicate with your computer. And since that's all they look at here in NJ it is what it is. Make sure that all your idiot lights work on initial startup as they will fail you for a dead bulb. They failed me for the bulb on the CEL even though there were no codes.

Thanks Jim, with that being said... when i do start up my wrangler only a few lights actually turn on. For example- i could see that there is a 4xD light in the dash but since i bought the car i've never seen that thing turn on. I hate to ask more questions but you did bring up a good point. Would you be able to tell me what lights i'm looking for on startup? thanks a lot

You can do an instrument panel test. to do so,
1) With the key in the off position push and hold the trip reset button
2) turn the ignition switch to the run posistion (don't start)
3) release the trip reset button
4) watch as the gauges will flucuate and lights will light up and turn off at random times.

The 4x4 light is one that will not illuminate during this process though. IF your 4x4 switch functions properly (most seem not to) when you put the Jeep in 4WD that indicator light will iluminate.

You should at minimum see the check engine lite and the brake warning lite.

You can run a dash diagnosis which will display all the functions and actuate all the gages by holding down the trip meter button and turning the key to the run position then release the button. After the automatic check all will return to normal.

Keep an eye on the idiot lights and make sure they lite up.

Yep, just 05-06 but I didn't know what year model yours was. FYI you can update stuff like that in the "garage".
