interior light

So last night I walked up to my 99 TJ, the interior light was on. Strange I thought, so I opened up the door and played with the push switch, nothing happened. I recruited a friend and played with both driver and passenger push switches, nothing happened, light still on both doors closed. I then removed fuse number four from behind the glove box, again light still on. So in the end I removed the bulb.

I thought this was all very strange, will pull the wiring apart soon when I build my soundbar and move the light from the foot well up to the roof. Maybe will rind and fix the problem.

Have you verified the dashlight dimmer control is not clicked into its interior lights 'On' position?

Now where would that be?
I don't have an obvious switch for one, so I have never used it.
Thanks Jerry.

We're you turn your headlights on, closer to the steering wheel. It's how you would dim your dash lights...if you click it an extra click it turns on the interior lights.

Erm nope, I have the pull switch for headlights and that's it. One pull gives me side lights and dims the dash, another pull (full extension) gives me dipped headlights. No other switches or anything around there. I have not found a way to turn on the interior light before.

Turn that pull headlight switch. That's how you get the dome light to come on without opening doors. It is also a dimmer for your dash lights.

You rotate your headlight pull switch left (CCW) to dim the dash lights, to the right (CW) to brighten the dash lights. Rotate it far enough CW and it will click to turn the interior lights on. In your case, rotate it CCW to turn them off.

I turned the engine on, twisted the light knob to the right (cw) no change to dash lights, back to the left (ccw) till it stopped. This placed the light bulb symbol on the knob in the upright position. Repeated at pulled out position one and two, also with only ignition on engine off. No change at all. Sequence repeated with the bulb back in. Light remained on at all times. Burnt my fingers pulling it out again.
Any suggestions? I have tried removing fuse four and that leaves it on too.

Defective light switch, the rotary portion to control the dashlight illumination level and interior light does go bad, it happened to my '97 with the same type of knob.
