intermittant radio

On my 2003 Sport it has the stock radio/cd still and have been having problems with the unit loosing all power while going down the road. It will not come back on until I have turned the ignition off and gone somewhere, then when I get back in its on and fine again. Don't know if I should blame the radio unit or some other electronic piece. If its the radio I will just get a new one. Anyone else had this problem.. Didn't see it in the search I did
Thanks
Ben

Time for a new radio..Pull the radio to check for loose connections but it kind of sounds like your radio is overheating and comes back on after a cooling off period. Does it stays on for the same amount of time each time? Another theory would be somehow you are losing 12V to the radio while the ignition is on. Leave your radio unbolted and next time when it shuts off, have a handy test light/multimeter and check the 12v ignition and constant 12V wires to confirm that you still have power. Hopefully you do and it's a bad radio instead.

Thanks Wattapunk. Kind of figured that was the road I was heading down. Wasn't sure if it was something that happened a lot or just a random thing. I'll get on it. I've been out of town on business so just got back.

My 03X does the same thing. Not that often though. I don't think it is overheating. Happens on very cool night also

Needforspeed, I had the exact same issue in my '03 Sahara. It would lose all power, including the clock. It seemed to happen more often when hitting bumps, but it would do it occasionally on smooth roads as well. I ended up replacing the stereo with an aftermarket unit, and have not had any problems since then. It's been about 6-7 months now. No more problems.

Sure looks like the radio is the problem. Thanks Powertrip Yours is for sure doing exactly what mine is. I see a new unit in my future.
Thanks everyone.

Powertrip - I've got the same problem in my '03 Wrangler Sport. Hitting a bump in the road knocks my radio offline, although my presets aren't affected. It's just like I turn the jeep off with the key...and of course it comes back on after I cycle the key...mocking me... Instead of chasing wires, I'm gonna just swap it out. What after market unit did u choose? How easy was it to swap? Thnx! 8-)

My problem turned out NOT to be the radio, but the IGNITION switch! It has the tendency to wear, allowing the key to back out lightly...especially if you have a heavy key chain...gravity is working against you too. The power is disrupted, knocking the radio off line without affecting the memory. Before wasting cash on a new stereo, gently pull on the key while the radio is on....preferably sitting still! If your ignition switch or key is worn enough the radio will go off. I've heard people remedying it by either getting a new switch or going to the dealership and cutting a new key. I just push the key back in and keep on jeepn!

Mine is ignition switch related. My radio and turn signals go out at the same time and a slight wiggle back and forth like you are starting it gets it going again.
