Question Is a new exhaust worth it?

Over Christmas break I am thinking of putting a magna-flow or Gibson catback on it and I was wondering if it there is a noticeable difference in the power and if you can really hear it. I have the 4.0 straight six in my Wrangler X. I know you cannot get the sound like a V8 but I want it to be heard. Is Gibson and Magna-flow good for it, or is there a better exhaust kit? I am not too worried about the price. Thanks!

I had a Magnaflow fitted a few weeks back and I love it. It was the muffler only and it cost me $130.
It sounds great especially when you first fire up the lump. At 1800rpm it has a really nice tone, and over 2500 it roars down the road.
Its is hard to say if it has added power for sure, but I think it has and I would guess at 5-10hp. Another consideration is pissing off your neighbors; if you keep your revs down, you can leave your house in the morning without waking up the neighborhood; I was told that a Flowmaster would be too loud, inside and out. I would reccomend Magnaflow to anyone.

I did the 14" Magnaflow on my 2000 and am very pleased with it. I did do new tubing from the muffler out the back and went with 2.75 inch exhaust to maximinze the deep throaty sounds. $160 out the door at local muffler shop. It's a little loud cruising on the interstate even with a hardtop but overall I am very pleased. That combined with a K&N I feel my mileage improved significantly.

Amen to the replies that rave about Magnaflow. Put a Magnaflow on my '06 and it provides a nice, deep resonant sound that is not too intrusive at cruising rpms. Makes sense, though, if you're going to un-restrict the outflow you should also loosen it up at the other end. I put on a K&N cold-air intake and a spacer on the throttle body. Between those items and the Magnaflow I think you get a bit more oomph in the midrange. I was going to spring for the bigger throttle body, but a local Jeep customizer here told me it really isn't worth it. sr

I had a Banks monster exhaust catback. wasnt very loud at all. but it did give some nice gain to push my 35's on the hills. ive heard that the flowmaster 40 muffler will give you the deepest, hollow sound that will be the loudest.

No I dont believe there is really any noticeable increase in power, I also dont run one so I dont have any personal experience.

I think most people who buy them are the "audiophiles" personally id love to have one but I refuse to shell out the money for it since it wont really increase my off road capabilities.

I cannot find any place online thats sells just the muffler that will fit on a stock 04 catback. do you have to do some custom fitting to put one on or what??

run it loud and proud!! nothing better then setting alarms off on those little rice burners in small parking lots. I have a flowmaster on mine and it sounds good. not sure what one it is. It was on it when i bought it. Sounds good just puttin around and good scooting down the highway at 65-70.

i forget what magazine did it, might have been JP or Petersons 4wheel, but the website has an entire exhaust shootout with video comparisons of what each type of muffler sounds like on a 4.0 TJ

I have the banks, its not too loud, but better than stock. Power increase? Negligible, if at all.

The Jeep I'm getting has a full header back stainless steel exhaust system by Borla.

Although this is a I4 it has a nice tone, it's a little loud in the soft top though.
