Is this natural for the front drive shaft ?

I got under my jeep today on a creeper just to look around. Don't know a thing about mechanics myself, (that's why god invented mechanics), so people like me can take their cars to them.....

Anyhow, while underneath there, the jeep was parked with the manual transmission in 1st gear. I could not rotate the rear drive shaft any whatsoever. The front drive shaft on the other hand, could be turned maybe 1/4" and you could hear it clank against the gear in the front drive shaft each time you rocked it back and forth.

Is that normal or should it have been held tight like the rear drive shaft ?

You was in two wheel drive...the rear axle is holding the vehicles weight from being moved "in gear"....the front drive line is not engaged "in 2wd".it will have some play in it.
