Jeep 2.5L ticking noise.

Could this be a bad lifter? Or exhaust manifold because the bolt closest to the firewall snapped? Heres a video of the noise: http://youtu.be/5A0q8mg1UXM

Get it checked ASAP some say the tick will get less with thicker oil but mine sounded exactly like yours and I'm now replacing my motor.

What was wrong with your motor that made you get a new one?

I hope thats not my problem. I believe i just have a bad exhaust manifold becaus ethe bolt snapped in the rear closest to firewall. That hols the manifold on and it doesnt change in tone after the engine is on for a while.

Yeah mine never changed tones was consistent I hope it's not your problem either. But wouldn't hurt to get checked and then just replace the bolt if that's all it is

To replace the bolt i would have to remove the head anyways because it snapped off inside of the head.

That was exactly my problem! Engine imploded @ 98K miles. It all stated with a ticking noise that sounded like it was coming form the top of the engine. Now, I am looking @ $2700 to install a crate engine and new clutch...

Dang! Did you figure out what made the ticking noise?

Sounds exactly like mine when it had a broken piston skirt... I did baby it for about 40k miles before I finally replace the motor... I did my own work and my replacement cost me about $1600.

And did the broken piston affect how your engine ran? Mine runs perfectly.

In one way or another it will affect the running either a complete failure or slowly breaking down.

Might have to drop exhaust to get oil pan off I did on mine but it's a 2000 2.5 then around 15-20 bolts around it after drain oil of course the valve cover take a look at gasket if not bad can put back on but napa or advance has the gaskets or can get them

Ran fine until the side of the piston itself broke out and then it knocked like crazy...

On mine it gets quieter after the engine is warmed up. Did it do that on yours too?

Yes, at first I thought it was the "normal" lifter tick everyone talks about...
I probably could have gone longer but I over reved it getting up to speed, once I did that it was a knock all the time
Still ran great and got 19mpg, but sounded like a can of rocks

Ok. Do you know if you had an exhaust leak or not? I still feel like my noise is from the missing bolts on the manifold

I had the exact same tick for two years then the skirt broke off of #3 piston.
IF you still think it's manifold bolts thats your call but I would not put my money on that . Just my opinion.

Mine knocked 125-160 when I traded her in. Mostly in the morning and quieted up when up to temp. My assumption was piston slap.

I just pulled al my spark plugs for fun and they all look good in condition. Would a blown piston affect how the condition of them?

Depends how broken the piston is if it'll let oil past.
Like I said nine ran fine until the very end...

Can you check to see if the piston skirt is broken with like a compression test?

I went through 2 manifolds in 2 years and broken bolts figured out its from my motor warping. So limping it alone till I trade it in this weekend for a 4.0 I do love the 2.5 but at the same time I can get a great price for it before the motor goes and I start blowing up lifters.
Did the bolt break inside the block?
