jeep likes to turn it self back on after I walk away?

Ok well my jeep has a new problem.....ughh this month has being hell with this jeep, anyway...

After I shut off my jeep I open the door to get out and it starts back up again by itself with out the key in it and runs for about 10-15 sec. and then shuts off by itself. Any thoughts?

I did get a misfire code a couple hours prior (my jeep was running for about 12 hours total today, the whole way to the trails, on the trails and on the way back) but i rest the codes with my scanner that I keep in my "offroad bag" and the codes didnt come up again(would they come up again if there was still a problem after I rest it?)

THANKS

So it misfires after you take out the key and then turns on for like 15 more seconds afterwards but the starter never engages to starts the engine after you pull out the key?

it's called dieseling but I haven't heard of it happening in computer controlled vehicles.
It used to happen quite a bit back in the old days but a good tune up or carb rebuild would generally take care of it.

Thats what I was thinking too skeeter. Dunno how that would happen in a fuel injected vehicle though? You would have to have injectors leaking down, and the jeep still getting power in the ignition circuit?

strange.

X2. It is called dieseling because the engine is running without the spark plugs firing, it is firing off on heat and compression using whatever fuel is getting into the intake. But I have never heard of it on a fuel injected vehicle either

ok straight off the book
"can be caused by high idling, carbon deposits in combustion chamber, low octane fuel, overheated engine or spark plugs with too high of heat range."

Too bad it doesnt say anything if some of these include fuel injected engines.

but dieseiling requires that the engine is still spinning, ive never heard of an engine diesling after it has stopped, the whole thing is it explodes from the heat and pressure but there is no pressure once it has completely stopped and gone dead

kind of on a side note, but has to do with you maybe leaving it in gear and parking brake on, is it bad for my engine in my CJ5 is i shut it off and when it diesles i just put it in gear with the brakes on so it sotps, is that bad for it that it get shut down so fast or is it just liek shutting a car off regularly?

Ive been wrapping my brain around this for awhile. If its not dieseling, ie. if the motor is STOPPED and then restarting, only thing I can think of:

AFtermarket alarm with remtote start on the frits;

or you got a short in either the ignition cylinder (Thing the key turns) or a starter wire or something. The more I think about it, it would HAVE to be a short in the ignition switch. even if the starter wires had a short, the computer would be off. My vote is ignition switch.

if it is dieseling, ie. running-on after its cut off, run some seafoam through it, and do a leak down test on your injectors.

I think his starts back up while its slowing down, thats why i ask if the started engages.

In that case it wouldn't spit and sputter for those 10-15 seconds

It's probably a transformer. You better hope it's an Autobot, or you could be in some trouble.

I've heard of this happening, mostly in the early 80's with black Trans Ams. This one dude, Michael Knight, had a special watch made that gave him voice control over his car. It worked pretty well. You might want to see if there are any of those watches on eBay. I'm pretty sure that would take care of your problem. For real......

Making it stop like that shouldn't hurt it.
The problems causing it to diesel in the first place will hurt it eventually though.

tossing a battery shutoff switch will eliminate the chance of it being ignition switch problem.

no i mean like when he shuts it off turn the power off too, unless the jeep never actually shuts off then it wouldnt do any harm, and im asusming he wouldnt walk away if the engine was still running

but it will mess up your clock and radio settings, so i guess it s a last resort

I am willing to bet it is an ignition switch. You never did tell us if it is dieseling or if the motor is stopping, and then restarting itself.
