jeep shutting off at highway speeds

did a bit of searching on this, seems like it happens to alot of 2002 4.0s. but still found nothing.

friday i was driving down the high way doing about 65-70. the jeep sort of hopped forward, almost like a misfire. then 53my RPMs dropped to 0 and the jeep shut off. i pulled to the side of the road, and it started right back up, get back to speed, and it would do it again, so i drove home very slowly. driving around town it seems fine. only when im going over 45.

codes i got were
p0340
p0353
p0352
p0351

i dont really want to throw parts at it and have it not fix. it had been raining all friday till now. im guessing do i just maybe have a wet connector? i dont think the Cam sensor is bad because it starts right up. anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance.
jim

Had a similar issue without all the codes on my 98 2.5. Only after driving highway speeds for extended periods if time. Not sure on all the codes and what they are and too lazy (worked a 24 hour shift yesterday) to get on my computer to check them. However IIRC they are indicative of ignition related issues. Crank sensor is a very great possible fix if so.

I believe 0340 is camshaft position sensor if I'm not mistaken. I think that being outta whack can cause other problems as well. I would suggest replacing your camshaft position sensor and seeing if everything starts working properly again. Good luck

I was going to post some research that I did but, I'm not sure its really helpful.
(Sticks tongue out at Big Sarge, in jest)

I was hoping that you got some cat or O2 sensor codes. A bad cat will make it stall too. Tap the cat and if it sounds "sound"(no jiggling of broken glass inside), then its okay. It doesn't hurt to check.

I found a Jeep thread of people with your similar codes and problems, and they fixed it. Other guys got the "shaft" from the dealership, and he was asking for prayers. Hence, I didn't want to post it.

That sudden engine stall makes me think the CPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) has gone bad. That's not an uncommon part to go out & when it does, that is the symptom it causes. The CPS is what provides the engine & computer's master timing signal & without it, the engine won't run or start. They often go a little intermittent at first before totally failing.

thanks for all the replies guys. I was also leaning towards just changing the crank sensor and cam sensor.

figured I'd update, it was the cam shaft sensor. i replaced it with and aftermarket sensor and it blew in a minute.. so I ordered one from Chrysler and put that I and it worked. lucky for me I work at a shop and got the parts at a discount. hopefully all is well for a while now.

okay so changed the CKP and CMP sensors and the o2 sensor. nothing happened, no start. checked all fuses and wiring. nothing there.

turns out i sheared the gear off the oil drive unit, so i changed that too, and it started right up, let the jeep run for 15 minutes to warm up and i throws a p0340... it never ends.
