Jeep starts and then stops.

I searched the forum and didn't find any posts that were similar to the problem I'm having. First, the jeep gets driven maybe once a week. Second it has a brand new battery. Now onto the problem: I started the jeep and no problems. All gauges and lights are normal. I drive for maybe 5 minutes and stop at the store. Come back and start the jeep same as before, everything is fine, then it starts idling real low like around 200-300 and then even lower until it dies. I turn the key to start it and it cranked for a fairly long time before it fired and I had to keep my foot on the accelerator pedal or it would try and die again. So I drove it to my destination and if off idle there's no problems. The only thing I noticed was that the voltage guage was moving back and forth a little, but nothing like I've seen with a bad alternator. After about 40 minutes of highway and stop light driving it's back to a normal running vehicle. I shut it off for about 4 hrs and it started and ran like normal. So any ideas? I'm sorry the post's a bit long, but I wanted to give as much detail as possible. Thanks.

I took the vehicle in to find out what was going on. The test said replace the battery. The battery was a 3 wk old Optima red top. Took the battery back to Checker and replaced it. Left to go camping the following day and had no problems during the entire weekend. Yesterday I started it and drove it after a week of sitting and no problems. It appears that it was a bad new battery. Thought I would pass this along in case anyone else ever has the same problem.

thanks for the update, thats a weird one.
"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president."
