Hey everybody, awhile ago my 2000 Jeep wouldn't start so I bypassed the clutch safety switch. Today I put in a new switch and it still won't start. I watched a video on how to change it and I did it the same way he did. All the wires are good but it won't start, it just clicks, when I put the fuse back in #20 it starts just fine. Is there else that is broken? Thanks in advance for the help. Is there a clip that should hold it to the firewall? Mine just slides on the rod.
It definitely has to remain fixed in relation to the pushrod, so you'll have to figure out why it's moving. I'm a little too lazy to go stick my head under my dash, and besides my 06 may be different. Can you get a pic?
I don't think it will pass state inspection without it. If I can't figure it out this weekend then I will just try to get it inspected and hope for the best.
I just took a look at mine, it moves freely on the pushrod as well. That's not how I remember my last few vehicles with clutch safety switches being. The pigtail wasn't even hooked up on mine so I just set my meter for ohms then pushed the pedal - nothing. I moved the switch by hand after that - again, nothing. So I popped the switch off the pushrod and moved the slider by hand - nothing. So I guess mine is bad, and since it's not checked during vehicle inspections here I'm not replacing it. Mine only has 2 wires so apparently it doesn't cancel cruise when the pedal is depressed. Now I'm really curious as to how this free-floating clutch pedal position switch is supposed to work!
The LAST thing I'd worry about is the clutch interlock working, of course I grew up driving cars when the lawyers hadn't yet told us we needed clutch interlocks. Heck not even my late mother or grandmother needed them, they were taught to step down on the clutch or shift into neutral before starting the engine and did so.
I am 110% ok with not having it in my jeep at all but I'm not sure that it will pass inspection without it. I'm just going to try and get it inspected tomorrow or Saturday and if it passes then I'm going to take it out and return it.
I suspect the switch needs to be installed closer to the firewall, i.e. the springs on the switch may need to be compressed a little to get it between the lip on the shaft and the firewall.
