Junk Windshields

Anyone else going through lots of windshields? I'm about to buy my 5th! 3 of which just cracked for no reason I could find. Maybe it's the very cold temps here...just curious. 2006 Rubicon Unlimited.

ive had 2 rocks come up on my Jeep and crack it. I was going to get it replaced before I left the states, but I was too cheap. even at $134 I was too cheap.

But I also plan on working on it for a while and not driving so thats $134 saved for a little bit

it's only $140, replacing yourself or having someone else do it?

Should not cost anything. Your auto ins. covers it! It's what is called a safty concern. Any windshield that has a crack the ins. comp. has to fix. They just don't like everyone to know about it.

Check the frame for square and flat to make sure it isn't stressing the glass.
Jeeps tend to go through windshields more than other rigs because it presents such a flat, almost vertical surface to oncoming rocks.

Not necessarily true - depends on the type of coverage and deductibles you carry. If the insurance companies would cover all safety concerns, they'd be fixing almost anything that's broken or worn on your car and your premium would be 10 times as high.

Have gone through several ... a few from rock chips ... but recently a random crack originating from the bottom center edge .... could be uneven heating from the defroster. We have had a couple crack like this.

I actually noticed I have a rock chip - had the jeep about a month, but there are placed round here, NE PA, that will repair chips before they spread...repairs are covered by insurance no out of pocket.

Been really thinking about it as the more I drive the more I realize this big flat windshield is like a bullseye for rocks!

I had my windshied replaced about 5 month ago when a slight chip turned into a big crack. Insurance deductable was $500 and even if the insurance woulda covered it, it woulda been $260, so I was $125 out of pocket, no insurance claim.
About 1 month ago I got another chip, so I had the insurance cover the repair before it turned into a crack.
And a little less than a week ago, I got another chip!!
Looks like another call to the insurance co. to get it fixed again!!

I don't know what they make them out of these days but it looks like they are using the trick glass they use in movies. I put one in my YJ today...$145 installed. I have replaced eight windshields in 5 different vehicles in the past three years. I have two daughters on my insurance (both with multiple traffic tickets) so I just replace them myself instead of turning them in. My daughter has a 08 Hyundai that has had three replaced and it is broken again! I broke one putting a toll transponder on it by just pressing it onto the glass!

They do it.

Also on the insurance, most insurances should cover it without a deductible, but you do have those who do need a deductible = \ im pretty sure my insurance covers it.

Moral of the story get good insurance!

That's what I thought too. But found out thru L.E. that they MUST fix the windshield. No matter what coverage you have. I've had two replaced this way down here in florida. One on a 66 bug, the other on a mini-van. The bug did not cost me a dime. The van was a 50 buck deductable. Still better then 150. I don't know it may be different in other states. But I would check it out first. Since most Ins. compys. are all over.

Florida collects a fee from each commercial truck licensed in the state. The $$ is used to pay for broken windshields. The insurance companies pay for the repair, and are reimbursed by the state. The fee is based on the cost to replace windshields the prior year. In Florida, rocks appear on the highway because they are dropped or thrown on the roads by trucks.

Other states have hills and mountains where rocks can actually fall onto the highway!

If you have the windshield replaced professionally and a crack appears with no signs of a rock chip then have the company come out and look at it, they might rule it a stress fracture and replace it for free if it has been less than a year (I think) since it was installed! At least that is what happen too one of my four I've been through!

I've only broken one.

It was a bit more than a rock though. Had the TJ since 2003 and that is the only time it got replaced since I bought it.

Looks like you had too much pressure from the wipers pushing on the windshield!! That'd do it!! LOL
