Just plain annoying...

Ok, so Im 1200 miles from home. My '03 has 39,000 miles on it.

6 months ago I started off with a p0456 code (small evap leak).

Then about 3 months ago it turned into a p0442 code (medium leak).

Today it spit the p0455 code - LARGE EVAP LEAK.

I read a lot about it after I got the medium leak code, and learned that the issue was either dirty fuel, loose gas cap, dirty or loose gas cap gasket, or a cracked fuel line.

SO today I cleaned the gasket on the cap and screwed it on real good. I checked the lines coming out of the tank (as well as I could), but I see nothing wrong.

Is it time to take it to the stealership? I am not the most mechanically inclined and Im about to drive from Florida to Philly (in 5 days) and Im kind of bugging out that the issue is seemingly getting worse. THATS the part that bothers me - the code is getting incrementally worse, and I dont want to break down at South of the Border. I'll commit suicide

What should I do?

Did you find any cracks in any of the lines?

Most of the time the gas cap is the problem ....$8 for a new one.

OMG!!!! Unburned gas fumes being released into the atmosphere!!!!

Look under the hood on the driver side for a big, black plastic box with rubber hoses coming out of it. That black box is the evap canister. Check all those hoses out. One of those hoses probably has a crack in it, and it probably came loose from one of the fittings where it was connected.

If it needs replacing, cut off a small piece of it, take it to an auto parts store and find a comparable size vacuum hose to slip on there. It will cost you about $.75 a foot.

I'm curious why this started 6 months ago, and only now is it enough to commit suicide over, right before a big trip.

If you haven't gotten more out of the insurance company than you deserve, then you haven't screwed them nearly as much as they have been screwing you for the past xx years.

You could check all those hoses, but really, start with the gas cap. It's easier and more likely the issue given the age/mileage of that vehicle.

I have just read so many posts of jeepers buying 1 or 2 (sometimes 3 or 4) new gas caps (all different brands, all different stores) and NOT have that fix the problem. I guess I could just try it. But I am gonna re-check the hoses because I didn't know all the spots to look...I think I do now...

Thanks for the info on where to find the evap canister/hoses. I will inspect in the morning.

To answer your question:

3-6 months ago it was the small/med leak and since so many posters said I will drive myself nuts trying to find it I just tried cleaning the o-ring on the cap and reset the cptr. It wasn't until today that I got the p0455 code (large leak). I check the codes every day. But just to be clear, I have driven 2000 miles already this month (from Philly to FL), so I already did the
1st leg of the trip with no problems. Im really not expecting any issues but I'd like to fix this before I leave since it apparently got worse overnight.

Oh and the suicide part was a reference to breaking down AT SOUTH OF THE BORDER SPECIFICALLY (not breaking down in general). SOTB is a horrible place and most people who have driven from Philly to SC/GA/FL will understand the joke.

HEY! BE SURE TO BUY A FACTORY OEM CAP FROM A DEALER!

I wasted many hours chasing a phantom vacuum leak after I bought a cheap ... brand new... cap from Auto Zone and it still threw the code. I don't think they seal the same. I paid the $20- some odd bucks to the dealer, installed it, problem vanished! Its been months now.

So if you are going through 3, 4, 5 caps... they were probably cheap ones sold at parts stores.
