OK All... Again I'm new to the Wrangler world so please forgive me for stupid questions. I have a 97 TJ with 100K plus miles on it. It has 33's but the speedo was never corrected so I really have no idea how many miles are on the clock. It has a knocking noise at idol with cold. As soon as its up to temp it goes away. It does not get worse when under load or when the RPMs increase infact it goes away under those circumstances. Any idea where to start looking? It does sound low in the engine. I did replace the entire exhaust as it was shot so that's not it, I've blown up a few motors in my time so I know it does not sound like a rod getting ready to make an exit, Sounds louder than a lifter. All of the rockers look and feel right. Shy of tearing it down I'm not sure where to go. I also pulled the oil pan, I had a leak, and removed the truss to see if I could see a broken piston skirt and they all looked normal or at least the same.
Thanks in advance for any help here.:beerdrinking:
I hope it helps for your jeep, just remember, if it is a bad lifter, they don't get better with age, and one day you will have to address the problem.
I considered replacing the lifter, but figured if I go to the effort to pull the head, you might as well change all 12 lifters, lifters alone isn't a good idea, so you need to change the cam & timing chain at the same time.
My lifter started making noise at about 200,000, as time went on, the lifter got progressively worse from making noise when the engine was cold in the morning to when I fired it up in the evening to drive home, towards the end I was hearing it clatter while driving. My engine had some sort of catastrophic failure, most likely a broken piston at 320,000 miles. I bought a used engine with 120k, so far so good.
Yes I did the other one is fine. I kept it as a backup.
