Large evap leak.

The check engine light used to be a small evap for awhile and i knew it was the gas cap.
Got a new gas cap and it screws on superrr tightly and the check engine light went away for about 400 miles.
Came back on about a week and and went to autozone and they said it's a large evap leak now.

What should i do? what should i check?
is this a common problem?

Have you check all the vacuum lines along your evap system? Chrysler hoses are very common to dry rot and crack out at the purge valve/canister area.

Usually a LARGE leak is the gas cap. If it's not on tight the CEL will come on with that code.

But i remember when i had the small leak, i would get gas sometimes and the cel would go away by how i tightened the cap i guess, and when i got the new one it went away completly for a long time.

Yeah, that's odd...I'd definitely be checking the hoses for one being cracked. Like Az said, usually a large evap leak is a bad gas cap, whereas a small leak is usually a cracked line.

When I bought my 2001 Wrangler new it nearly drove me crazy with the check engine light. The first fix I didn't watch the mechanic close enough figuring it would be the only fix. The next time it was the pump under the hood that keeps the fuel system pressurized that was leaking. The next fix was to replace the whole fuel tank that was leaking gas out on the ground. After about a year I finally got rid of the check engine light coming on every few months.

Most probable cause is back by the fuel tank. There will be several.

check all the hoses back by the fuel tank, along with the hoses around the driver front inner fender.

Thats a pic of the ones I mentioned earlier.

The big one in the pic? Those are all for the evap system, deals with fuel vapors, the black box there is the charcoal canister.

Glad ya got it fixed though.
