Unhappy Leaks Gas On Fill Up

So, I have a 2005 Jeep Unlimited, does anyone else have the issue of the gas pumps (at any gas station it seems) not turning off in time and gas spurting out of the gas tank fill? Seems like maybe the gas is rising too quickly with too much pressure, so the pump handle can't sense it's close, then it spills out...

Any good idea's?

I'm tired of looking like that ass that should be handing in his man card every time I fill up.

A lot of people have that problem. Most just don't fill it all the way.

My 05 has this problem also. I have heard of a few checks but most likely it requires replacing the tank. +The safety valve or whatever it's called gets stuck. It is supposed to prevent fuel spill in case of a roll over, same principal as a ball in a wet/dry vac. I joined the "Quit filling it up" club after hearing that.

Funny, I have the exact opposite problem: The pump will click off seconds after starting to fill up a lot of times.

I get around it by pulling the nozzle out just a little bit so it's more horizontal. There was one station when I lived in WA where I always had to turn the handle UPSIDE DOWN so the pump wouldn't shut off during fueling.

Never had any overfilling or spillage while fueling, though.

x2 with my 98-usually have to have it on the lowest flow(auto) rate. i just waste my time cleaning out any trash and cleaning the windows. luckily 15 gal doesn't take all that long.

My Jeep has both problems mentioned above. If I put the nozzle in straight up and down it will not fill the tank and it keeps clicking off. If I hold the nozzle horizontal and slowly put gas into the tank after about 20 seconds I can put the nozzle straight up and down and fill it as fast as the pump will go.

Now the other problem I have found is sometimes it does not shut off and yes gas will go all over the ground, but I have also found out that this only happens at certain gas pumps at certain stations. Yes I now wait for certain pumps when I fill up my Jeep as I know the pump will shut off. More often than not the pump works fine, but I bet 25% of the pumps will spill gas on the ground. Find a pump that works for you and stick with it. Yea when you go on vacation it gets a little tricky.

My 2006 Wrangler X 6 cyl developed this same fuel spill on fillup problem for the past year or so.
I just lived with it .

Then , my check engine light came on , code P0456.

Took it to the dealer as it was still under warrantee.

After they replaced the fuel cap, then the fuel lines, they discovered that valve on top of the fuel tank was sticking open .

They had to replace the fuel tank to replace that valve.
This fixed the check engine light problem .

However replacing the tank also fixed the fuel spill on fillup problem , hooray!

My '04 Unlimited doesn't do it, but my GF's '06 Liberty does. Doesn't matter what pump or station.

Per other posts on this forum over the past 1 1/2 years or so this seems to be a problem affecting some Jeeps but not others. Search it out if you want other ideas.

I have an 06 Unlimited and mine has both problems as well. I usually just lean down and listen to the tank filling up. When I hear the gas start to come to the top I stop pumping. This way I can still fill my tank. I talked to the Jeep dealership but unfortunately my dealership won't do anything to fix the problem liek they did for some of the other posters...

'06 here, and it's done it since the day I bought it. Just thought of it as one of those Jeep tricks it likes to pull and have learned to live with it. I just watch how many gallons have gone in so far and when it gets close to full I slow it down as low as it will go. Still spits some even at that.

The more that I think about it , this Wrangler Fuel Spill problem should be a Chrysler/Jeep Recall.
Spilling fuel is a dangerous situation at the pump , let alone the environmental impact (it has to we washed away ,somewhere ,somehow?)
My 06 Wrangler X Spill Problem was fixed by replacing the Fuel tank (fortunatly still under warrantee).
Seems this is the only way to fix the cause (a small valve built into the top of the fuel tank is the culprit).

I’m hoping for another push to get the TJs included for extended gas tank warranties like the ’07 &’08 JKs recently got. I have over 325 handles of TJ owners that have complained of fuel spill out when they fill up. These come from the various threads on various forums. Some have filed complaints, some I’m sure haven’t. Let’s all file or re-file. I will continue to add to my list.

If anyone has this problem but has not posted, please do so. We need to know how many TJs are actually having this problem. I know there are always suggestions for work-arounds but please don’t post them here. We want to actually get this resolved.

To help spread the word, I made up some business size cards & carry several everywhere I go. Anytime I see a TJ in a parking lot, I leave one on the windshield. It just asks them if they are having this problem & if so directs them to one of these forums. I hope others will do the same.

The most discouraging thing is that Chrysler has more than doubled the price of replacement tanks. If anyone can verify that they have improved or redesigned the inlet check valve (ICV) let me know. It was supposed to have happened in Feb.

Check valve (ICV) manufactured by Alfmeier.

Also worth noting that while the ’03-’06 TJ tank now lists for $914.00 (last previous price I could find was $427.00), the JK tank lists for $192.00 (2dr) & $265.00 (4dr). All from mopar-wholesale.com (their prices are $630.20, $132.25, & $182.85 respectively)

..and here is the PART NUMBER to the latest Fuel Tank:

52059617-AG COST: $341.60 RETAIL: $427.00

.

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
52059617AG $914.00 $0.00 $630.20
Fuel system - Fuel system components - Fuel tank
Fuel tank - 2003-06 2005 - 2006

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
52059718AH $192.00 $0.00 $132.25
Fuel system - Fuel system components - Fuel tank - 2 door
2 door 2010 - 2011

Item Number MSRP Core Price Price
52059729AG $265.00 $0.00 $182.85
Fuel system - Fuel system components - Fuel tank - 4 door
4 door 2009 – 2010

is the NHTSA complaint site. it is quick & easy. Have your VIN handy.

I don't know if it helps to refile. I've since been told it won't take any complaints with duplicate VINs but certainly anyone who has this problem should file their complaint.

If the tank is spitting back, the valve is stuck open & a stuck valve won't help in a rollover.

As of 6-20-11

There are 347 complaints filed for the 2006 JEEP WRANGLER

Fuel System Gasoline (226)

Fuel System Other (8)

There are 301 complaints filed for the 2005 JEEP WRANGLER

Fuel System Gasoline (202)

Fuel System Other (3)

As of 8-3-2011:

Since my 6-20 search there are 16 more complaints for ’06s, 13 for “Fuel Systems Gasoline” & 13 more complaints for ’05s, 9 for “Fuel Systems Gasoline”. That is 22 more in 44 days. More '05 & '06 TJs are having this problem & they are filing complaints. Work-arounds are fine, but let's get Chrysler to FIX THIS.

There are 363 complaints filed for the 2006 JEEP WRANGLER +16

Fuel System Gasoline (239) +13

Fuel System Other (8) 0

There are 314 complaints filed for the 2005 JEEP WRANGLER +13

Fuel System Gasoline (211) +9

Fuel System Other (3) 0

68.0% of all complaints (247/363) for ’06 & 68.1% (214/314) for ’05 are fuel related & most are for this fuel spit-back problem.

As you can see the majority of all complaints filed are related to our problem.

Others have fixed it manually using some GM parts.
I bought the part but I just plan to put the valve in my hose and no try to make the GM hose fit.
