Locker / Regearing

hi,

now i saved enough money for new gears and some lockers.

i already found out that 4.56 will be the best for 33s and the i6 with auto tranny.

now i have to choose some lockers. i want something that´s good to handle on the road, the TJ is my daily driver.
i only do moderate offroading and i´m still a newbee. that´s why i want some automatic lockers.
i thought about two true tracs. will that be a good choice?

or do you recommend another type of auto lockers?

I have a aussie locker in my d30 and have no complaints

I plan to get one for my d44 when i have a little extra $$

here in germany i never heard about the aussie locker.
can you tell me something about it? how does it work?

Nicolas, are you planning on staying at 33's for a long time? Because I took a ride today in a TJ with 33's and 5:13's and that 4 speed auto still bogged down with the O/D on. You'd probably be better off just going with 4.88's.

4.88 with 33s?
a friend has a rubicon with 33s and 4.88. he has 3000 rpm in 4th gear at only 60 mph. that´s a bit to much i think. with the 4.56 it will be about 2600 rpm.
i think 4.56 will be best. did i say that i now have 3.07 gears with my 32s...? 4.56 would be -50% less than my actual gears.

your right. 1 liter 87 octane fuel costs 1.65 $ here... thats about 6.25 $ a gallon.
but with the 3.07 gears my TJ i very slow. after i drove a friends TJ with 33s and 4.56 gears my TJ felt like driving a -100 hp car. so i MUST regear...
but when i regear why shouldn´t i put in some lockers at the same time.

Stay with your 4.56 gears.

Having lived the greater portion of my adult life in Germany (Bergish Gladbach, Koln, Hessich Oldendorf, Speicher) I am all too familiar with the weather there. DO NOT put an auto locker in the front of your Jeep. Those days when you're needing to use 4WD on the road will not be good days. Lockers inherently pull straight and you will severely under-steer, if she steers at all in the sometimes icy and snowy roads.

Also, because black ice is so prevalent there, I would suggest you go with a selectable locker in the rear. Catching black ice on a auto locker can lead to way too much fun. It's funny the terrified look on other peoples faces each time you go around and around while you wave at them.

As for the Aussie, it is a cheaper knock-off of the Lock-Right. I don't know if Aussies come with a hardened cross pin but if not I would buy the Lock-Right since it is standard.

I have nothing against auto lockers. I run a Detroit in the rear of my Jeep but for where you live I would go selectable.

After thought... what rear axle do you have?

i have a rear D44. all european TJs come with it since 2003.

but the true trac is differnt than other 100% auto lockers.

I run trutracs front and rear, I have been very happy with on road as well as off road handling, and have the same D44/D30 combo.

no problems with on road handling. sounds good. thats what i want.

how is it off the road when one wheel has no contact to the ground? does the true trac still work then? or do you have to use the brake and gas pedals at the same time to make it working?

is the TJ with two true tracs as good as a TJ with one arb locker? a friend has one on the rear.
i think it´s better to install two true tracs than one arb locker. am i right?

If you get one wheel in the air, tap on the brake with your left foot and forward motion should return (yes, you have to you use the brakes), it's a small price to pay.

thats ok for me. i just asked because the trac loc i now have doesn´t work like this. with a wheel in the air tapping the brakes doesn´t bring me forward again.

what does a true trac cost over there? here it costs about 600 $. thats very expensive i think...

$400 for the front, same for the rear, you can find them a little cheaper sometimes too.

I've got a trutrac in front - regular detroit locker in rear and I'm pretty happy. Not a daily driver though - just for fun.

The True Tracs are going to be much more civil than a locker since they are a limited slip. Thinking about it this might be a real good match. Here is my preference list and let Euro's be the decider.

Front: True Trac Rear: Ox Locker (saw this setup on a daily driver as was very impressed)
or
Front & Rear: True Tracs

With the wet/damp conditions of Germany when off-roading the True Tracs would have enough spin to properly hook up and would do you well.

The Detroit is fine for driving if you know that it is there. However, it can be tricky if you are not paying attention in the winter. For that reason I do not allow anyone to drive my Jeep in the winter.

Can't tell you a price for the True Tracs but the regearing is generally $250-$350 per axle.

Gears for front and rear plus install kit about $500-$600.

Having had several different lockers, my pick is the ARB air locker. You have control over it being on or off when you want. don't have to worry about funky on road pulling or clicking. You do however need to make sure the shop that installs it knows what they are doing, as most ARB issues can be traced back to a bad install job.

Just my two cents (or Euro equivilent) worth, If you are going to have to spend 600 on a tru-trac, then I would recommend you get an ARB. Full locker when needed, open differential at the flip of a switch. As someone said about the driving conditions (black ice, snow), this may be a better choice for roughly the same amount of money. I have ran Powertrax No-Slips, Lock-rights, a Detroit Locker, and ARB's. ARB's are well worth the money and are my preferred locker, especial for a daily driver in snow/ice country.

IF you have the funds, go with selectable lockers like the ARB or OX. When not engaged, you won't even know they are there. When engaged, you will. You won't have to worry about on-road characteristics because it will drive just like it does now.

Im just wondering... how do yall find such good prices for rear gearing install?? Do you know the people in the shops or something? I've asked around (in north jersey) and all the shops want in the ball park of $1000 for one axle is i supply the overhaul kit and the locker

That is really steep... When I had my YJ regeared (5 years ago) I paid $1100 for both axles with them supplying everything needed for the regear.

And Chili, that's pretty messed up for a gearing job to cost a grand with you supplying the gears and bearings. I agree with Moab Man's assessment at least over here on our coast. Anywhere from 250 to 350 per axle plus gears.

most of our DC dealers will have about 3500 $ for 4.56 gears and two true tracs. i made a deal with a jeep dealer. he will install me all that for 2300 $. and he can use pictures of my car for advertising.

That is called rape. No regearing job is worth more than $400 tops and that is the extreme.
