Lockers

Okay, before I ask this question I know I am setting myself up to be blasted by hard core off road jeepers. I have a 2003 JK Sport with 44d rear end. I plan on staying with 35-37" tires. I live in Houston, and our Jeep is our weekend drive around vehicle. Not looking to break everything on the jeep, so really not much off roading will be done. I am gearing up to a 4.88 and I'm going to need to switch out the diff due to the stock 3.73. The question is, we don't get snow, well hardly ever, and it's going to mainly street use. Are lockers really needed or can I save me some money and go without. Be kind. Thanks for the help in advance.

JK? This is the TJ forum! Although you're welcome to post here if you want too. You won't need lockers unless you're doing some real hard stuff, although it wouldn't hurt. Also, I've heard the front axel isn't quite up to running 37's.

It's cool dude no worries. What I said for a JK still applies to your TJ though. 37's are a little risky.

I'm moving down to 35's, I just need smaller rims also. The jeep was babied, but he thought 22's with 37's were a good idea.

Since you live in Houston, you don't have to worry about icy or snow-covered streets that can affect locker choice.

What type of wheeling do you do or plan to do? I don't know the terrain around Houston, do you have things like rocky canyons to wheel in or is it flatter with more level dirt trails? Not everyone needs a locker, let's see if we can figure out if you need a locker or maybe a really good limited slip differential might be the way to go.

He stated that he will not be doing much off roading. With that being the case he can live without lockers. Even if he was wheeling mild trails he can make it without lockers. Just put some of your locker money in a good winch and you will be good.

wouldnt be bad to look at an auto locker for the front as you dont have a need for 4x4 unless you are off-road

When I regeared I had the shop install Detroit TrueTrac and very happy with the results. By virtue of it being a Limited Slip there was no add'l charge to the gearing less the parts.

Mine has done very well both on and off-road conditions: dry pavement, wet pavement, street flooding, mud, mud holes, root climbs, and rock traversing (up to about 2' I suppose). All able to stay nice and controlled and no need for mega muscling.

Others will probably suggest a lunchbox type locker just in the front which shouldn't engage in 2WD only in 4WD

I think it depends on the times that you do go offroad whether you would want the peace of mind that lockers give you. I grew up in Houston and now live in Dallas. If you go to Marble Falls to do some wheeling, you may really want those lockers. If the cost isnt too much of an issue, I would add them. But that is me. Also, when you go to sell it, while you may not get more for your Jeep, it will make it more desirable for a buyer, IMHO.

But how about getting back to the basics of driving and learning the capabilities of the rig without lockers. Throwing money and parts at a rig does not make you a better driver, but they can get you into tight spots. Leave the axles stock and build once you get some seat time, that way you know what you and your rig are getting into, before it is to late. Because lockers can get you there but may not get you out. Just my 2 cents.

There's no additional installation charge for a full case locker either, they install just like an open carrier does. There's literally no difference in installing a Detroit Truetrac or a Detroit Locker.

Good to know, Jerry, and thanks for keeping me honest.

The shop was telling me that other locker types need: air compressors and things of the like to actuate the locking mechanism while the LSD type did not. Looks like either I was sent or received bad intel

Depending on the locker you get, the shop was partially correct. Some lockers use a compressor and air lines (ARB) some use a cable and switch/handle (Ox) some are electronic and would need wiring and a switch.

But some don't use anything extra (Detroit Locker) like Jerry mentioned. They activate on their own and do not require extra parts or systems.

This is also why it is mentioned above that the OP didn't need to worry about snowy/icy streets when deciding what locker to get. The Detroit Locker can "activate" during loss of traction on icy roads and cause unexpected traction changes. (I have no experience with this so I'm sure someone else could explain it better).
