Lockers Info Needed

I have already posted some threads to get me this far. Now i'm ready to re-gear and want to put lockers in at the same time. I have been torn between Detroit lockers and ARB lockers. Can someone share some info with me so I can make a decision. Also I was told I should go with 4:88 gears for my setup.

Here is my rig info.
99 TJ
4.0
Manual Transmission
Dana 44 Rear 30 Front.
5.5" RE Long Arm Lift
35" Tires.

(This is NOT my daily driver. However I don't want to limit myself to off road only.)
I've tried to answer most questions I think you would have to help me out.

With 35s you should definitely go 4.88 gears.

Lockers are a very hard choice for most people. I wanted to go the ARB route with my jeep but I had to drive 3 hours one way to find a qualified installer. That's why I chose detroits.

Depending on your situation and budget I would hardly think you would ever get anyone to say detroits over ARBs. ARBs allow so much more ease when wheeling. Especially if you can't turn. In my opinion there is always the downside to ARBs. One being the cost, 2 being the install, and 3 you are still working with a dana 30.

The biggest down fall I see to ARBs is just the cost. A detroit doesn't require anything outside of itself to function and function well. ARBs require a compressor, thoughtful install, compressor lines, and switches. I doubt you will ever hear anyone say they wish they had gone detroits instead of ARBs.

I say if you can find a confident installer and can bank roll the ARBs then go for it. They will be friendlier to a short wheel base wrangler when driving on the street

4.88 in a small d35 rear axle? before installing some lockers i would install some bigger axles...

Im with mr.cliff. 4.88 will be perfect for a manual on 35s, and ARB over a detroit(if you can find someone good to install it) any day.

BTW: this is judging from a RWD v8 with a detroit rear, and my rubi with air lockers

I have detroit lockers on my '79 Ford pickup and they can be a PITA on dry pavement sometimes.... So I have to manually unlock the front diff...saves me $500.

Have you thought about running Ox Lockers? They are still selectable and at this point in their lifespan I think they are more reliable than an ARB. Less setup involved, less extra equipment to buy, cable will be harder to cut or pull out than an air line. However they are right up there with ARB in pricing.

Detroits are an excellent traction device. Like Clifford said it really will boil down to what you want to spend and what you really want. If you want selectable front and rear or if you want auto lockers front and rear. A lot of guys will run a selectable locker up front to help with turning radius while in 4wd and then a Detroit in the rear.

A little side note on selectable lockers. Joe and I were out wheeling with some guys on Saturday night. There was a SOA built YJ that was up towards the front of the group. He was trying to attempt an obstacle and was bouncing and basically humping these rocks. Joe's wife finally came back to get us to help him because he was really about to break something. So we walk up there and are trying to help him when we heard his compressor cycle. Joe asks "Is your rear locker on?" Guy looks down and flips the switch and crawls right up. Moral of the story is that if we wouldn't have walked up he probaly would've busted something in the rear end up to and including the locker just because he forgot to turn it on.

If you want street manners, ARB hands down. We are a ltttle spoiled out in this are as we have a number of really good geear and locker installers:

Tri-County Gear in Pomona (will install but not warranty gears not purchased from them).

All 4 West in Corona (will not install gears not purchased though them). Recommended as the best Dana installer around.

Currie Enterprises in Anaheim. Probably installs more gears than anyone on the entire west coast. 3 full time installers. Specializes in Ford axles though.

You got the same axles i do, but ill be running a detroit in the rear and a selectable in the front. Not sure if im goin with ARB or Ox yet. Ive got on board air and a 3 gallon tank, but my buddies run those lil air lines and they have been a nightmare in the kind of wheeling we do. But im looking for a dana 44 for my front at the moment. 4:88s will be good for 35's although im runnin thm for 38's. 4:11s is what i would run if i was goin to stick with a 35....but the 4:88s give me the grunt i need to haul mine around. I drive mine 65mph+ alot to and from work....so i still need some high end.

Mudweiser,

What is your timeframe for installing your lockers?

My installer was recommending the same solution to me. He is big on Detroits. I told him I was leaning towards ARB. He said how about Detroits in the rear and ARB in the Front. I think this may be the best solution.

Well if anything it will save you about 300 bucks between the locker cost and the install.

Depends on how quickly i find a dana 44 front end. Been lookin at the pre made and built to spec ones...but they round 2400 with lockers and gears of my choice. Dunno if i want to sink 2 grand into the whole axle new...or just keep lookin for a used one and rebuild it.

I have arb's front and rear, as stated make sure who ever installs them knows what they are doing. knock on wood, mine have never let me down. They even installed the three switch pod so it looks factory.

I have also had a detroit, works fine, but it will of course let you know its back there on dry road.

Why do you want the front Dana 44? It's really not that much stronger than the Dana 30, it uses the same 760 size u-joint which is the same weak link. I'd only go for a front Dana 44 if regearing to lower than 4.88 was a pressing need. If I were upgrading a front axle, I'd go with a Dana 60 or Ford 9" which gives some serious strength advantages.
