Question locking steering wheel

i was trying to figure out what size engine i had and stumbled across a bit of knowledge in the owners manual. i read something about being able to lock the steering wheel while the engine is running and then you shut it off and the only way to unlock it is to start it with the key and twist the wheel left and right a certain way. anybody know what im talking about? oh ive got an 02

i do know that in some cars the steering wheel will lock itself if you try turning it while the engine is off and the only way to unlock it is to start it up, but i cant remember if it was my jeep that did it or some other car. its been a while since that has happened to me.

Its a saftey thing so nobody can take off with your jeep. You can't turn the wheel until the key is in it. I always do that whereever I go. Just turn it off take the key out and turn the wheel to the left or right until it locks.

I believe if the key isn't in, it will automatically lock as soon as they try to take off after hot wiring your Jeep and starting to make a turn...unless they broke off the lock cylinder on the ignition or whatever controls the steering lock.

Yea if you try to turn it back and forth without the key itll lock. All you gotta do is insert the key and sometimes jerk really hard back and forth and itll unlock
