Long Arm Suspensions

Here is a real Newb question for you... but then again if you dont ask you dont learn.

What is the definition of a Long Arm suspension??? What makes it a "long arm" as opposed to some other lift of the same height???

if you have a 4" lift on regular control arms, their angle will be pretty steep. A long arm will take the frame mounting point and move it back to decrease that angle. The lower the angle, the better the ride.

Long arm is better, but out of my price range by far. It also gives you more articulation along with a smoother ride.

Long Arm Lift:

Short Arm Lift:

Short arm lift uses the stock Control Arm mounts, a Long arm lift requires new mounts.

Actually that is only a partial long arm. A true long arm has rear long arms too.

In a standard Long Arm kit for a TJ no. But his is a custom set up, and his front arms are much longer than any after market kits.

Long Arm is the best type of lift to get, because it offers a great ride on road, and maximum articulation off road. But they are extremely expensive. I am saving for the Rock Krawler long arm kit.

Many years ago when I had my XJ, a large group of us came to a rather steep, muddy rutted hill climb. The trail leader was flogging it to make up, some would make it up only to get stuck in the ruts, many where strapped to get over it. Then, a powder blue bone stock 75 CJ-5 pulls up, dry rotted tires, and a very healthy V8. He then crawls up the hill like its paved. Thus you can have all the fancy stuff in the world on your jeep, but if ya don't know how to drive it don't mean much.

Yep. You're right. When you buy "kits" they usually do have front and rear arms with it. I guess I will have to start calling my junk a medium arm setup.

Your isn't a kit though... so the word kit doesn't even apply. And they still call the kits for XJs Long Arm Kits and they only have front arms.
