I thought "long block" referred to buying a crate engine that already had all the stuff you needed as opposed to a "short block" which was just the block.....maybe I'm completely wrong.....

Long block is a term used to describe an engine that has the block, head(s), and basically the "hard" components assembled. When you buy a long block you will have to swap out all the external components from your old engine. Like AC compressor, Power Steering Pump, Intake and Exhaust, etc. Sometimes you will hear it called a crate motor as well. At least that is the way I always understood it

right and a short block will include the actual block plus the rotating parts like the timing and cam. the heads are not included. it may or may not have an oil pan.

Short block = Post #6

Long Block = Post #4

Complete = Crate engine, drop in/plug & play. Only have to transfer build spec items (AC, alt, Pwr Steering, bell housing and flywheel...). Intake, Exhaust, Coil, Rotor are with the new engine.
