Looking for a little more power

I have a 2002 jeep Wrangler Sport with 4.0L and 5 speed manual shift. I don't trail ride with it. I mostly use it for highway driving and infrequent light towing.

I would like to be able to being doing 65MPH on the highway and hit a slight incline and NOT have to downshift to 4th.

Looking for the most cost effective suggestions based on experience.

I currently have 3.07 in it. What do you recommend ? I know I will loose MPG re-gearing and am ok with that. What gears do you recommend ?

What size tires and are you going to run bigger ones in the future.

I have 33/12.50/15 and run 4.56 and she will pull most every hill without downshifting. it had 3.07 and was a shameful dog

I have LT235/70R16 I am not 100% sure I won't go bigger, but if I do I won't go bigger than the size you have.

With those tires you shouldn't have that much of an issue. When I bought mine she had 31"s on her. It didn't like hills but was still drivable and fuel mileage was WWWAAAAAY better. Does it run ok? or just a lack of power on hills

Check your tps . It can be bad and cause a lack of power with out throwing codes. I run 31s with 3.07 and dont have to shift at 75mph.

How's your plugs and air filter.

Same drivetrain on 30"s and up and down highway hills are no problem.

I love my 4.6L stroker, no problem in headwinds or hills. About a 1500-$1800 mod brought me to 260hp

Air filter is new. I have not changed the plugs yet. When I say hill I am talking about a 30 degree incline or so. The tires are a little over 29".

What is a TPS ?

Where did you find a 260hp stroker for $1500-$1800?
Just for the long block.... it's usually over $2K. Not even mentioning the other items needed to bring it up to 260 like tb and injectors.
I want in on this deal.

Tps throttle position sensor. If its bad you dont get the correct aur fuel mixtures and the computer has a coronary trying to setup the fuel map

Ok. I wasn't thinking stroker "kit". He just threw out "4.6 stroker mod" for under $2K like it was no big deal.
BTW... the kit you listed was for a 4.0/4.2 stroker. Spec sheet for that product lists up to 195hp too... which is barely over stock and a far cry from 260hp.

so if the TPS is bad it would explain why on a 30 degree incline going 65MPH in 5th gear with it floored I actually lose speed ?

You would see considerable improvement re-gearing to 3.73, but it would most likely run you around $1500 parts and labor. That would also allow you to go up a little in tire size without major power loss.

If you never plan on going to like 33's that might be an option, but if you are planning a big increase in tire size, wait and figure out what you want to wind up with (tire size wise) first.

I feel your pain...used to have 3.07's also.

I will give it a shot and also replace the plugs with AutoLite XP985 while I am at it. Any recommendations for Spark Plug wires ?

30 degrees is very steep. Does not matter what you have, everybody is gearing down for that grade.

No spark plug wires in your 4.0L jeep. It's a coil/pack rail.

Those charts are pretty useless because they generalize all vehicles and don't even take into account different transmissions.

No way you're driving on roads at 30 degree angles. Highway systems have a maximum allowable grade of 7%, which is roughly 4-5 degrees. 30 degrees is roughly a 60% grade. The steepest road in San Francisco has a 31.5% grade.

I have 4.88 gears and 33s. Driving I-70 in the mountains (which have 7% grades) I have to shift to 4th.
